Convention llotes
Mrs. Harvey Mitchell of Kinston,
vice president of the Universalis!
Convention of North Carolina Inc.
called the session to order at 10:20
a.m. Friday morning. Rev. M. W.
Cobb led a devotional with Mrs. W.
H..Skeels at the piano. Mr. Graham
Dozier, chairman of the Rocky MCI
Chamber of Commerce, .expressed
a generous welcome to the dele
gatus ttu ; , . . i,e was inter
ested in muu... i I.otky Mount more
hospitable to many Conventionlsts
in the future.
President J. A. Ward of Rose
Hill presided. Delegates from Clin
ton, Kinston, Outlaw's Bridge; Red
Hill and Rocky Mount were present
at the opening session. ; : ' ;
The business of the Universalis t
Chufth , was discussed and 'plans
for future programs, outlined. Each
Church presented a detailed ae.
port of work during the past year.
Rev, J. H. .Morgan gave a report
of the newly organized Unitarian
Church , In ,, Charlotte.,;, ,-j ..i ;
la the afternoon, Rev. P. R. Giles,
Director of the Unified Appeal of
the Universalist Church of, Ameri
ca addressed the N. C. Assoclon
of Universalist Women. , ; -
Rev. John H. Morgan, minister
of -the 1st Unitarian Church In
Charlotte led a discussion at a
meeting of the men. Mr Morgan,
presented the Korean conflict as
an outcome of two nations engag
ing in a power struggle. "In a pow
er struggle, both nations are po
tential aggressors", he : declared.
While each nation,' Russia and the
U. S.: claim to be protecting its
own security and while each Is con
vinced that it is right, the power
straggle has developed into a third
world war. The U S.: support of
theunpopular leaders such as Sy
ngman Rhee has weakened the po
sition of this nation's moral lead
ership in the-world. The prospect
of a long war ahead of us spells
suffering and sacrifice. Even tho
ugh It 1s too lata to avert such dis
aster and destruction at this point,
there Is a real hope that from the
sufferhg of the peoples of the world
a government of peacemay be es
tablished.; This would be possible
only when we are prepared to eli
minate conditions of extreme pov
erty, disease and insecurity among
peoples around the world.- Upon
these conditions Communism has
thrived and will coi.
as a result 'of ;the deslrtu, hi . .
another-war warned Mr. Morgan.
" The women voted . to continue
their Tnstitute Days this year
On Friday evening Mr. Morgan
preached the Occasional sermon.
He recalled the two historic
"means" as an answer to tha great
problems of today. International
wars and national Injustices must
be met by the "pure means" , of
"turning swords into plowshares
and spears Into pruning hooks" and
Amos' prophetic statement '"Let
righteousness roll down as. water
and justice as a mighty stream.;
Rev. P. R. Giles led a Communion
meditation. Rev. L. C. Prater pre
sided at the Communion service.
During the coming year the State
Convention will have as its presi
dent Mrs. Steve Wilkins of Rose
Hill; vice presidents are Mr. John

vey Mitchell of Kinston, and Mr.
