VA received appraisal requests for 7279 proposed and existing homes during December, 1954, which was a decline of 10,651 under Nov ember, 1954, .but an increase of 122 per cent oyer the 32,958 received in December, 1953. Of the 73,279 homes for which VA received appraisal requests last month, 44,251 were proposed homes, a decrease of 3,478 from November, 1954, and 29,028 were existing homes, 7,173 under the previous month. VA received 52171 home loan ap plications in December, a decrease of 4,963 under November, but an increase" of 119 per cent over the 23,864 received in December, 1953. WHAT VETS ARE ASKING Q ,Is there a cnarge made for filing a claim withthe Veterans Administration for veterans or vet erans dependents benefits? Where can such a claim be filed? A. There is never a fee charged in connection with any type of claim made for any benefit admin istered by the Veterans Administra tion. The only VA office within a 50 mile radius is located in the Bor den Building in Goldsboro. Your claim can be filed there. Q What are the features of the twenty payment life plan of Nation al Service Life Insurance A The 20-payment life policy provides insurance protection throughout the lifetime of the in sured by the payment of a fixed premium for 20 years. At the end of the 20 year period premium pay ments cease, but the insurance con tinues in force and guranteed va lues continue to accumulate. Also, such dividends as may be declared on a participating policy will be payable throughout the lifetime of the insured. Q Are tHere any circumstances under which a Korean veteran would not be entitled to make his one-and-only change of course un der the Korean GI ,Bill training program? A Yes. If the veteran drops out of training because of his own mis conduct, neglect or failure to apply himself to his studies, he would not be permitted to change to another course. In fact, he could be de nied any further training. - Q How much of a real-estate loan can be guaranteed? A Sixty per cent of a loan for the purchase or construction of a home may be guaranteed, up to a maximum of $7,500, provided the veteran has not previously used any of his entitlement. However, if before April 20, 1950, a veteran obtained a guaranteed loan to buy or build a home, or if at any time he has used his entitlement for pur poses other than obtaining a home, IOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o e o BARBECUED Coming Up At The Annual Meeting Of The DIXIE $1,000 PER ACRE CLUB To Be Held Thursday, January 27 6:00 P. Choose Riht lliircgen For The Job Commercial nitrogen., is ' mighty Important in North Carolina agri culture today, According to E..R. Collinb, In charge of agronomy ex tension at State College. "Crop yields, except for legumes, are very closely tied in with the amount of nitrogen used," he em phasized. , Tar Heel farmers use about 114, 000 tons of nitrogen annually. They could profitably use even more up to about 175,000 tdhs per year, he explained. . You can get your nitrogen from various sources, which vary in their nitrogen content. For example, ni trate of soda has 16 pounds of ni trogen per 100 pound bag, while an hydrous amonia has 82 pounds of ni trogen per 100 pounds of material. In selecting your nitrogen source for a particular job, one of the first things to consider is whether to use the amonia or nitrate form. In general, the effectiveness of either seems to depend on the kind and age of the plant Plants can use ammonia or nitrate nitrogen. Corn, cotton, and many other plants do equally well on either form. Organic nitrogen, such 'as that found in cottonseed meal, and urea must be changed to either ammonia or nitrate nitrogen before the plane can, use it. Regardless of the form used, the nitrate nitrogen will be present in the greatest amount for summer crops in well drained, warm soils. This is true because of the rapid change from ammonia to nitrate un der those conditions. For the same reason, you should be cautious in using sources con taining all amonia nitrogen for cool season crops unless you know the specific requirements for the crop, he continued. Ammonia changes to nitrate very slowly under cool. damp conditions. All ammonia sources of nitrogen include sulfate of ammonia, and anhydrous ammonia. Nitrate of soda contains all nitrate nitrogen, while Calnitro, ANL and nitrogen Solution 60 have equal amounts of ammonia and nitrate nitrogen. Ni trogen Solution 5 is two-thirds am monia and one-third nitrate nitro gen. Some other things you will want to keep in mind in selecting your nitrogen sidedressing or topdress- ing material will be the cost per pound of nitrogen, cost of applica tion, time of application, the acidity or basicity, and the residue left af ter the nitrogen has been used by the plant. You can find out the cost per pound of nitrogen ty dividing the cost per 100 pounds by the per cent of nitrogen contained in the mater ial, Collins pointed out. Cost of application is mighty im- portar too. This is especially true when you are considering changing to liquid or anhydrous nitrogen sources. Can you handle the job with your present equipment? Will the savings in cost of material off set the cost of additional equipment? Or, can you get custom application at a reasonable price? These are some of the questions you need to the veteran has additional entitle ment remaining for a loan to buy or build a home in the amount of the difference between the total guar anty previously used and $7,600. Real-estate loans for farm or busi ness purposes may be guaranteed 50 per cent up to $4,000. O CHICKEN o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o o RENT No job is too large or answer. ' In some cases the time of applica tion may be important Soma farm en like to preplant pheir .nitrogen and save much-needed labor later on during the rush season. This practice will not' work on sandy soils, Collins , emphasized. If you should try preplantlng, use the am monia form of . nitrogen, since it does not leach from the soil so read, ily. Make preplant applications six. to 10 Inches deep. v ' What is the acidity or basicity of the source? This will be important in some cases, depending on your soil Condition and the crop. Collins explained that nitrate of soda tends to make the soil basic. Calnitro, ANL, and other 20.9 per cent am monium nitrate-lime sources are considered neutral and have no per manent effect on soil acidity. v Ammonium nitrate, anhydrous Nitrana 4, Febran, Urea and sulfate of ammonia are acid. One of these sources would be particularly de sirable where overliming is a prob lem, Collins said. Another thing to consider is the residue left in the soil after the ni trogen has been used. Nitrate of soda leaves sodium. This is known to substitute to some extent for potash, on low potash soils, for some crops, such as cotton. It is not known to do this 'for other crops, such as corn. Ammonium nitrate, anhydrdus ammonia and urea leave no residue. Calnitro and ANL leave the lime in the soil. Sulfate of ammonia leaves the sulfate. Health For All Life-Saving Trio It started with a headache that wouldn't go away. The pretty little six-year-old girl lay in bed for days crying pitifully for relief from some thing she could not understand. Finally she lapsed into a semi-stupor, recognizing no one, moaning constantly. "Tuberculous meningitis." These are tragic words. Less than 10 years ago when a doctor pronounced them they meant death. There was noth ing to be done for this most serious type of TB which affects the cover ing of the brain. Then came a drug, streptomycin, and in 1947 the survival rate went up to 25 per cent. Soon another drug with an even longer name, para aminosalicylic acid (PAS), was ad ded. In 1949 the survival rate climb ed to 80 per cent. Then in 1952 came isoniazid. With all three in use, over 90 per cent of the victims of tuberculous menigitis live. The pretty little six-year-old is one of those saved from death. It was touch - and . go for weeks, but the trio of drugs finally pulled her through. She can join her playmates now. She can go back to school. In spite of the great progress that has been made, meningitis is still a most serious complication of pul monary tuberculosis, one which fre quently occurs in young children. The disease must be diagnosed ear ly and treated promptly to save life and to prevent crippling, blindness, and retarded mental capacity which it sometimes leaves in its wake. The earlier treatment can be started, the better chance the patient has for complete recovery. There is no need to be fearful whenever a child has a painful headache and nausea, but the doc tor should be consulted. The symp toms are vague, and could indicate a number of childhood diseases. If there is any chance that the child has been exposed to TB, the doctor should be told so that he can make the necessary tests immediately. A politician may be a very good talker, and still have an impedi ment in his thoughts. Opportunity has been known to meet a man half-way, but seldom travels in a jet plant.
