F. Casey, director of the psychia try and neurology service at VA central office In Washington. D. C. He said approximately 1,700 bed have been freed in VA mental hos pitals since August 1952 by transfer of about 1,700 elderly: chronic men tal patients with physical, illnesses to VA general medical and surgical hospitals that give special care to aged patients. 2 ' ' Results of the - ' transfer, have been even better than were expect ed,' probably because the . staffs of the general medical , and surgical hospital were able to give more personal attention to patients than the smaller staffs of the mental hos pitals had- been able to givo, Dr. Ca sey said. ' s All of the 1,700 patients transfer red from mental hospitals were sent to general medical and surgical hos pitals nearest their - homes, which were staffed to give psychiatric treatment.
