Mr. Robert L. West is the cur
rent Church Lay Leader elected
in June of this year. He was born
near Magnolia in 1908. and was
reared in Warsaw. He received
' his education from Warsaw High
School, Lousiburg College, Duke
University and received his de
gree in Law from Wake Forest.
He is married to the former Anne
Van Wyke Pollock, of Kinston .

1953. He is currently assigned to

- Mr. Aubine English of Warsaw
is the Director , of the Men's
Chorus of the Warsaw Methodist
Church. He was born on January
15th, 1933 and reared on a farm
about 8 milea east of Wallace.
Mr. English graduated from the
Wallace High School in 1951 and
was married to the former Grace
Torrana of near Warsaw in 1953.
i They have one son. Ha is a mem-
ber of the Warsaw Junior Cham
ber of Commerce. He was em
ployed by the Carter Fabrices
Division- of the J. P.. Stevens
Company for 5 years and Is cur
rently employed as a T. V. Tech
nician at the Western Auto Store
in Warsaw. He has been a teach
er in the Church School, Sun
day School uperlntendent and a
member of the Board.
W. JASPER SMITH ,
Mr. W. jasper Smith, Metho
dist Layman, of Bethel will be
the speaker at the Laymans Ser
vices in the Warsaw Methodist

ober 18th. at eleven o'clock.
Mr. Smith was educated at
Bethel and Duke University with
some graduate work in law. He
spent live years as High School
Principal and then entered the
lumber business' and farmed. He
was a member of the Board of
Education or Board of Commis
sioners of Pitt Count, from 1932
until 1956 and served several
terms as Chairman of Board of
Commissioner. He was a member
of the State Board of Correction
and Training for" one term and
his se'-ved on several special
committeses of the State Board of
Education.
. Mr. Smith headed the Lay
work of the North Carolina Con
ference of the Methodist Church
for 15 years. For ten years he
was a member of the Methodist
Board of Lay Activities and is
currently a member of the Na
tional Board of Missions. He did
extensive work in the establish
ment of the N; C. Wesleyan Col
lege at Rocky Mount where he
is now heading the building committee.
JOSEPH E. QUINN
Mr. Joseph E. Quinn, of the
Kenansville Methodist Church,
will be the guest organist for
the Layman's Week, Mr. Quinn
was born and reared in Kenans
ville where he is in business with
his father. He was educated at
Kenansville, Davidson "College
and Kings Business College and
is married to the former Ruth
Kennedy of Beulaville; N .C. they
have two children, Joe Jr. and
Frank. Mr. Quinn is a member
of the Kenansville Town Board,
and the Local Fire Department.
He has served two terms in the
army in 1946-1848 and 1950 and
1951. He is a special agent for
Nationwide Ins. Co. He is trea
surer of the Kenansville Metho
'dist Church, Organist, and Sect'y
of the Methodist Mens Club.

listed man and an officer with
the 501 1 and 517th. Parachute
Team, seeing action in Italy,
France, Belgium and Germany.
From 1940 to 1955 he was a mem
ber of the N. C. National Guard.
He has served as Assistant Director-
of ' the Institute of Govern
ment at Chapel Hill and as a
special agent of the. Federal Bur
eau of Investigation.
A member of the N. C. State
Senate in 1953 and a member of
the. Ports Authority 1950-1953..
From 1954 to 1957 He was chair
man, of 'the Official Board of the
Hay Street Methodist Church of
Fayetteville and served as asso
ciate District Lay Leader of the
Faetteville District from 1952 to
1957. He was elected a delegate
to the General Conference of the
Methodist Church in 1957 and
also to the Jurisdictional Con
ference.. .
At present He is Chairman of
the Board of Trustees of the
Methodist College at Faetteville
A member of the N. C. Bar Asso
ciation, American Bar Associa

former Margaret Rose Knight of

date of the laying of the corner
stone. The church record discloses
the purchase of a Mi arce lot on
Bay and Pine Streets in the town
of Warsaw, the deed being from
Dr. W. W. Faison and wife, S.
B. Faison, to Dr. Matt Moore,
George W. Pridgen, Thomas M.
Moore, J. S. Westbrook and G. J.
Lambeth, Trustees. This was on
November 8, 1888 and one year
later, to the day, the cornerstone
was laid. The charter members
were Mrs. Sallie E. Johnstone,
Mrs., Nan Bryan, Mr. and Mrs
Thomas MeGee Moore, Bernice C.
Moore, Dr. and Mrs. Matt Moore,
Mr. and Mrs. George Rhodes, Mr.
and Mrs. J. S. Westbrook, Mr. and
Mrs. G. J. Lamberth. The church
stood on this location until the
spring of 1920 when lt moved to
its present site on Plank Road
Street. The building program was
begun in 1930 and completed and
dedicated by Bishop Paul B. Kern
in 1935. The growth of the church
was' regular and a new building
program was begun in 1954 and

Methodism Comes To N. C.
Methodism came to N. C. in
1776 when Edward Dromgoole.
Francis Poythres and Isham
Tatum were appointed Mission
aries. In 1780, Asbury founded
four circuit, and the first con
ference was held at the home
of Mr. Green Hill, out from
Louisburg in 1786. There were 24
preachers attending this first
conference. The N. C. Conference
was set off from the Virginia
Conference in 1856.

about three hundred people,
others will be seated in the Fire

years he has headed up the Con
ference Board of Evangelism, ser
ving as its president. 1955 he was
chief of Wildlife Resources Com
mission. In June of 1957 he was
appointed again to the Director
of S. B. I.

of the week. The speakers are
not receiving an hbnararium for
their contibution but the church
is to pay the travel expense. S. A.

A. C. Edwards of Hookerton

wards was born at Hookerton, N.
C and has lived and worked in
Green County all of his life. He
attended schools at Hookerton
and Duke University.
He has devoted his life to
farming as a vocation. In his
early years, he became interested
and active in agricultural move
ments and in all matters for the
promotion of the farmer. He has
held many offices in agriculture.
He served as President of the N.
C. Farm Bureau in 1949 and 1950
and now serving as Executive
Vice President of this organiza
tion. He has rendered outstand
ing and continous services to
his state and community in many
civic and welfare fields. He has
served serveal terms in the N. C-General-
Assembly. He was ' a
member of the State Board of
Education from 1943 through
1948. He was a member of the
N. C. Advisory Budget Commit
tee for 8 years.
He has been active for many
years in the Methodist Church
and served as Sunday School
Superintendent for 15 years, as a
member of the Bord of Stewards
and Lay yeader for 20 years.
When the new Goldsboro District
was formed he was elected a Lay
Leader and has rendered great
leadership in this capacity. His
unselfishness, outstanding abili
ty, enthusiasm and his devotion
to his Church has been demon
strated by his many accomplish
ments and the thousand of people
who regard him as a 'persoal.

oir, N. C. the son of Dr. and Mrs.
Charles C. Weaver. He received
his AB from Duke University,

of the faculty of Rutherford Col
lege and became its president in
1932. He then became president
of Mountain Park Junior College
in 1933 and 1934 He was
principal of the Jonesville Pub
lic Shcool from 1934 until 1941
and Superintendent of Statesville
City Schools 1941-1947. In 1947
he became principal of the Dur
ham City Schools and remained
there until his election to the
presidency of the new Methodist
College in Fayetteville.
Dr. Weaver served as secre
tary to the Governor's Commis
sion on Revision of Public School
Law. He is a Church Lay Leader
and has taught a Men's Bible
Class. He is the author of vari
ous articles in religious and edu
cational journals. He is a Kiwan
ian, a past Lieutenant Governor,
A mason, having been a District
Deputy Grand Master. At pres
ent he is Vice Chairman of the
Governor's Commission on Pub
lic School Finance. He was also
president of the N. C. Education
Association in 1958 and 1959.

Goldsboro, Tart and West Drug
gist in Roseboro and the Wilson
Rexall Store in Goldsobro before
entering the ministry in 1953. He
moved to Warsaw from the
Salem Methodist Charge of Gold

Mf. Sterling W. Marriner is
the President of Methodist Men
at the Warsaw Church. He was
hnm at Mackeys. N. C. and rear
ed in Plymouth and Goldsboro.
He received his high school edu
cation at Mackeys Ferry. Mr.
Marriner was the first president
of the Warsaw Lions Clubs, First
Master of the Warsaw Lodge No.
67, He is a 32nd. degree Mason,
a member of the Sudan Temple
A. A. O. N. M. S. and a member
of the Eastern Star. At present
he is in the construction business.
He has served about 25 years on
the Official Board of the Church
and was elected President of the
Men's Club in June of this year.
He is married to the former
Alene West, of Warsaw.
