The meeting was opened -with the singing of "Come Ye Thankful People, Come'.. Mrs. Lloyd ' White led the devotion by reading from' Corinthians 13 and followed by prayer. Mrs. Millie Turner made an interesting report on health. After the business session. Mrs. Mag Spicer gave the demonstration on preparing and freezing dishes ahead. The Christmas party was planned for December 18. The meet ing was closed by repeating the club collect. Refreshments of German cholo late cake, potato chips and coffee were served to the members pre sent. Top Farm Award Again Won By N.C. Bankers The aggressive and diversified farm program conducted by the bankers of North Carolina has a- gain won for them a top national award. ' The County Key Banker for Duplin County, Douglas R. Pea cock, Vice President, Branch Ban king and Trust Company, was ad vised today that the N. C. Ban kers Association has won the top annual Agricultural Award pre sented by the American Bankers Association' with the best record for farm service. This is the 17th consecutive year that the NCBA has won the top award. Peacock said that during- the past year at least 500 bankers actively ' participated in the va rious'Tsrm J'rolects sponsored by . the NCBA. The projects include a Short Course in Modern Farming at State College, attended by about 150 young farmers; a two-day farm credit conference attended by hundreds of bankers and farmers; a land judging meet in which nea rly 20,000 FFA members parti- ;- ' "it CECIL A. Vernon Deal, senior vice presi dent of The Northwestern Bank, North Wilkesboro, was last year's vice chairman and moved up to the chairmanship this year. The bankers' organization an nually appoints an agricultural liason man in each of the 100 co unties in the State. The bankers are called "County Key Bankers'' and they work closely with the Agricultural Committee. 1 Pleasant Grove 4-H Club Met On Monday evening the Plea sant Grove 4-H club met at the Community building. Phyllis Waller, president, pre sided. Janet Scott Herring ana Wanda Bell led the group in the pledges to the flag. Assistant agents, Mrs. Ralph Britt and Mr. Clapp, assisted the group in planning the program for the following year. Certificates of Achievement were given to Club members by the agents. Plans were made for a party on December 22, at 5:00 p.m. at the community building. . . y- . .... T. A. HAWES Thomas A. Hawes, 77 died Wed nesday morning at his home near Rose Hill. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 3-30 at the Island Creek Baptist Church by Rev. R. D. Riggins, pastor. Inter ment will be in the Family Ce metery near the home. He is survived by four sons, W. T. of Tipton, Ga., Homer E. of Rose Hill, Karey T. of Warsaw, and Wendell Hawes of the home, two daughters, Mrs. Varney Mc Clelland of Ocilla, Ga., Mrs. Ef fie Tuza, Berwick, Pa. Fourteen grand children. One sister, Mrs Annie James of Rose Hill, one brother B. L. Hawes of Wilmington.
