DavM 1. Craig of Resde viHe in 18M, it seems beat to content ourselves just now by re calling the great names and per sonalities associated with the charcit since the earliest times. , It is well known that the Me tory of the Now Hope community ^ is bound up with the names of such families as the Strayhoms, Craigs, Kirklands, Freelands aftd B&ekwoods, not forgetting the Mebanes, Tates,- Harts, Nelsons, Mitchells add Johnsons. One of the church’s founding fathers was Gilbert Strayhorn of Scotch descent who came down from Pennsylvania in 1740 and settled at Hawfields, then in Orange hot now in Alamance County. The name was originally feited to the County of Orange as . liquidated damages.. - :; The award of the contract shqll be conditional upon funds being made available for such building hy County funds; and no bid can be accepted nor any contract award ed until specific instructions are issued by the County of Orange. , Therefore it will be necessary to allow thirty (30) days after date Of opening to- allow sufficient timer for revipw and approval of docu ments by the County officials. Stanford, Chairman J. E., Hawkins Clarencc D. Jones G. P, Carr, Superintendent STREAK, possibly stree-ahn. When asked how the horn got lfitd his name, Gilbert one* answered that he pat it there to make it sound. And cer tainly the name ia more distinc tly and fesmtndifig with the uorn sxucnfQ. ■,-# ■■ .:t‘ " * * s - There seems to have trouble about land title#, possi bly due to the fact that Orange County, which took legal shape in-1753, was a pert of the Gran ville Grant, which was a sort of kingdom within a kingdom. Anyhow, the Strayhoras and as sociated families picked up and moved over in 1754 or 58 to a well watered and forested area which they called New Hope. Here they cleared land and set tled dewn, and here their de scendants still live. ■ These settlers nearly all be longed to the Scotch-Irish strain which has done so. much to de velop the Piedmont, section of North Carolina They were Scotch Presbyterians who to escape political add religious persecu tion had emigrated to Northern Ireland and then come to Ameri ca, entering mostly at the port of Phil a. Numbers of them remain ed in Pennsylvania, but others, attracted by cheaper land and a milder climate, emigrated south ward. They seemed to choose the route of the Shenandoah Valley fo the Dan River in Virginia which they crossed and found themselves in N. €., where thorn was no Anglican Church to both er them and where the Indiana were mostly peaceful and hospit able. The first lend purchaser at New Hope was William Craige, coming from Ireland, who owned wide tracts south and west of the present church. It is interest ing to note that the Rev. D. I. Craig, New Hope’s only histroian, could claim descent both from Gilbert Strayhorn and William Craige. (The name had an e on the end which Was later dropped). • • * The New Hope congregation seems to have taken form id 1756, the church in 1769. Haw fields had beeiv organized in 1755. The Rev. Hugh McAden, who is called father of the Pres byterian Church in N. C., and who traveled in this province as a missionary from April 1755 to May 1756, found log structures which were called meeting hous es between Hyco Creek and the Yadkin River, but elsewhere preaching had to' take place in, private houses. At this stage of our history North Carolina was not a state . but a royal province; The British Crown was represented by Ar thur Dobbs as. governor who liv ed at Old Brunswick, below Wil mington.- George n, who was so German he couldn't speak Eng lish, was king, and although James Davis had set up his print ing press at New Bern in 1749, Spanish raid* were still taking place at Beaufort and Brunswick. In *1756 Orange County had a populatjpn of about, 1000, includ &'SJl%’£SilE * IvO MmTwtM&WmPp \KltTBlCU *a Pennsylvania, creating a el the IndUm which greatly in creased the emigration south ward to quiet N. C 1* the same year « road from Orange County to the Cape fear hirer w*» au thorized, and also in 1755 a eom the House of Bur Francis Cor gin, Lord Granville’s chief agent, of “exacting exharbitant fees oh ail grant|!’, thus, exhibiting n symptom "of revolt which later hatched the- Regulators. At this time the settlers did business with “proclamation money’’, four paper shillings of which were supposed to eQual three shillings sterling, but since the paper tended to depreciate, there wad much vexation. The first settled minister in this area was the Rev. Henry Patille, who was called by the Hawfieldj, Eno, and Little River congregations in 1705. Ten years previously th* New York Synod had organised the Hanover Pres bytery in Virginm jta bawe juris diction over all Virginia and N. C. churches. In 1770 Orange. Presby tery was organized with eight congregations in North Carolina and four in South Carolina. The first meeting wa8 at Hawfielde. Mr. Patillo served in Orange County for nine years and then moved to Granville County where he served 26 more years. « • « Mr. Patiflo’s successor aftd pas tor ot the seCtfnd church P'S® the Rev. John DeBow, sob of Solo mon DeBow who had come from New Jersey to Hyco Creek in Cas well County about 1753. It io related of Rev. Mr. DeBow that once when he was preaching he was surrounded by Indians who manifested some hostility. The preacher produced a pipe, light 1 ed it, took a pull and passed if around. The Indians accepted it, had a smoke id turn, and per suaded by this sign of peace that all hands were brothers, departed | without doing damage. The third church at New Hope, built in 1805, had as its stated supply the Rev. Dr. James Phil lips of the UNC faculty. He serv ed the church more than 30 years. One morning in March 1862 he came out from Chapel Hill and found Hhe church bad been burned to the ground. Nev ertheless he held services as usu all, preaching from Psalm 1-9, verse 101. His son, Dr. Charley Phillips, was ordained before this congregation in 1866. | The fourth church building was built with Confederate mon ey and was opened by the Rev. James Phillips Oct. 25, 1863. j # The fjfth building has just been completed, thinks to the tremendous labors of the Rev. John E, Ensign.
