The program, introduced by the American Hospital Associa tion and the national Blue Cross Association, would provide * a comprehensive scope of benefits for aged persons. The program would be under private control and is the 'Blue- Cross answer to the Administration’s program to put health care for the aged under Social Security. There are over 300,000 persons in North Carolina above the age of 65, making up 6.7 per cent of the population, but this same age group represents about 11 per cent of all general hospital patients. The number of persons over age 65 in North Carolina is .increasing three times as fast as the total population. ^ If the Blue Cross proposal were adopted, Hospital Saving Association would expect -to join with other Blue Cross Plans to put the nationwide program into effect. Hospital Saving’s pre payment programs have always "Included eontiffuous protection for its subscribers after they reach 65. -For persons who had no pro chants Association. The proposal was presented t» the group by C. Whid Powell, local realtor who has been Chap el Hill representative to the Cape Fear Development Association for several years. After outlining details of the project and what he felt would be local advantages as a result of its* construction, Mr. Powell said that the local endorsement had been requested by Dr. Henry Jordan for the Cape Fear group. The idea was unanimously endorsed. The directors also approved a budget of $29,700 for 1962. It will be presented to the member ship' at the Association’s rnstat-1 latlon banquet for hew ^officers; later this month. At that time the membership j will be given a proposal to in- ] ^glude a trade promotions fund in the general membership dues. The new year’s budget as pro posed is substantially the same program as was carried on last year. Though the budget then ■ was $21,900, about $29,000 was taken in and spent as a result of increased income and expen ditures in the Association’s cred it Bureau.
