In Chapel Hill racial duty Additional pay for Chapel Hill policemen having to work over . time because of racial demonstrations here will be con sidered by the Chapel Hill ald ermen. 1 . -y f ^ The matter was brought to light in response to questions asked Police Chief W. D. Blake, who made a report to the Town Board on the role of his force in the demonstrations. Town Manager Robert H. Petit was asked to consider too matter and make a recommendation— perhaps with the idea of comp ensating the police .for their special duty above a. certain number of over-time minimum hours. -0 . ^ w Chief Bloke said his 23-man fipdf' had put in 777 hours of overtime duty m connection with demonstrations and picket ing since the current round of M|iP| activities began six weeks ago. In their Tuesday night action, the commissioners niade only ©he change — a $2,000 addition al appropriation to the contin gency fund, making it $9^000 for 1963-64. Town Clerk R. B. Todd said this was made possible as a result of June collections be ing $2,000 high* than had been anticipated. The new Town budget if $19, 000, or a bit more than 10 per cent above the $172,000 budget for the year immediately past. It is based on the same tax rate as at present — $.93 per $100 property valuation, the lat ter being $5.6 million. This source is expected to bring in $52,500 revenue. About $35,000 will likely come from the sale of water to retail customers Sewer, zoning changes set for Carrboro , Construction of a sewer line estimated to cost $2,500 will be built to serve Sue - Ann Court off N. Greensboro St. during the'Coming year by the Team of Carrboro. The appropriation was includ ed in the budget for the Mir year by the commissioners at their Tngsdny nigbt meeting. A payment of $17,700 on the municipal bonded indebtedness of $90,000 will be made this year. The tax rate is calculated at $.31 of the rate for debt ser vice and $.62 for the general fund. Clamroch commended the chief | highly for the work of Ms j force in. the controversy. The officer said he’d noted an in crease in tension at the picket ing and demonstration scenes in the past week, and in par ticular, he felt, some deliberate ly provocative motor vehicle violations. Mayor McClamroch, report ing on a meeting of municipal afffeials in Greensboro last weekend, said he returned “rather disappointed" in not discovering any remedies to the racial controversies which were not already being applied in Chapel Hill. Gov.
