Letters To
The Editor
July t, 1965
Dear Mrs. Sell:
Just finished reading the
Journal. It gives me a lift to
read the home paper when the
editor I know so well is the
sponsor. I get a little lonesome
at times here on the lake by
myself most of the time, but
I feel the stay is helping me,
and that is what I needed so
very much. I am moving about
some and I want you to send
my next issue to 1930 N.W.
Uth Road, Gainesville, Fla. It
is real hot weather here, but
we get a lot of rain, and that
helps some. Give my kindest
regards to everyone and I hope
to be seeing you folks again
before so very long. I must
go over to Cedar Keys for
some deep sea fishing in a few
days, and I hope to have some
good luck. With best wishes,
I am,
Yours very truly,
Kelly L. Cope.
New Times, New
Treatments
Ever get stymied trying to
read those great old classics?
No wonder .when you consider
how language and customs
have changed.
Sherlock Holmes is just
great for Grandpa. But when
A. Conan Doyle's supersleugh
of the Gay Nineties hails a
"hansom cab," what can it
mean to this generation ex
cept maybe a new pink-and
purple taxi with a drop top?
And when Thackeray starts
talking about "bathing mach
ines," who can be blamed for
thinking of him as a science
fiction writer whose robots
liked surf swimming?
It's the same with a less
ancient classic Thomas
Mann's "Magic Mountain," a
novel about the population of
a TB sanatorium. They were
a hapless company who stay
ed year after year and seldom
got any better.
Well, of course it was techn
ology that wiped out Sherlock
Holmes, two-wheeled horse
taxis. And saner customs over
took Thackeray's little mobile
modesty motels in which pep
ple did their surf-splashing

But what made Thomas
Mann's long-range TB suffer
ers obsolete was one of the
most striking developments of
our time a scientific revolu
tion in TB drug treatment. In
the 1950's tuberculosis stopped
being a disease that kept peo
ple bedridden for years. And
today six months in the hospi
tal is all that's needed in many
cases. Treatment with the new
potent drugs usually continues
at home or at a clinic; but the
rate of cures has gone up tre
mendously.
TB isn't "licked" far
from it. More than 50,000 new
active cases still appear each
year. Because the disease is
hard to detect, people who
have it in active form can
spread infection before they
realize they are sick.
That's why your Christmas
Seal association urges you to
get a tuberculin test or a chest
