MEDICARE
NEWS
Davie County residents who
have a 65th birthday in 1966
will be protected by medi
cares's medical insurance at
the earliest date only if they
apply during the three months
before they become 65.
Robert C. Thomas, social
security district manager in
Salisbury, said today that if
they wait to apply for month
ly benefits or medicare until
the month they become 65 or
later, their protection under
medicare doctor . bill insur
ance will not begin until
some months after they are
65.
Mr. Thomas explained that
each person who reaches 65
on or after January 1, 1966,
has a seven - month period
during which he may enroll
for the supplementary medi
cal insurance plan, but the
effective date of this protec
tion depends on the date of
his application. This individ
ual enrollment period begins
with the third month before
he is 65 and ends in the third
month after his 65th birth
day. As an example, Mr.
Thomas said, if an application
is not filed until the month
after a person becomes 65„
medical insurance coverage
does not begin until the first
day of the second month af
ter he applies.
Mr. Thomas urged every
one who has a 65th birth
day approaching, including
those who continue working,
to file their applications at
the social security office two
or three months before their
65th birthday. This early ac
tion will guarantee full hos
pital and medical insurance
protection beginning on the
first day of the month they
become 65 (but no earlier
than July 1, 1966).
Applicants should bring
birth certificates, he added,
but if this is not available,
the social security office will
advise them how they can
establish their age.
The social security office
in Salisbury is located at 105
Corriher Avenue and the te
lephone number is 633-6470.
Office hours Monday through
Thursday are from 8:45 AM.
until 5:00 P.M. and on Fri
days thru June from 8:45 A.
M. until 9:00 P.M.
