Page 2 The "If" In Energy Demand* In a few years, b there going to '-'fee enough gasoline to keep our tens of minions of aulas rolling T This was a frequent question long before anyone dreamed that there could ever be the «ast and growing automobile population •hat we have today. Almost from the day the internal combustion engine was ■tovented, there have been forecasts of a petroleum drought In accepting the American Petro leum Institute's Gold Medal for Dis tinguished Achievement during a for ty-year career of service in the oil in dustry, A. C. Rubel, retired chairman of the board of the Union Oil Company of California, had this to say about a shortage of oil and total energy: "I su &" gest with complete assurance that none will materialize in the predictable fu ture." He then went on to summarize some of the reasons for his opinion. For one thing, the petroleum indus try is in the business of total energy, not just oil. "The successful oil com- Religion In The Here And Note My son, Norvin, Jr., has just re turned from Berlin, Germany, where he was sent by WFBC-TV, Greenville, South Carolina to report on the doings erf the World Conference on Evangelism, in which our own Billy Graham was one of the outstanding leaders. I thought, that as a former Cooleemeeite, some of his reports might be interesting to JOURNAL readers. To The Greenville Piedmont "In this city which Nikita Khrush chev once called a "bone in the throat", Christian leaders who have gathered for the World Conference on Evange lism, are hopeful that some of the spirit of the conference will permeate the immediate area, as well as spread throughout the world. According to West Berlin church leaders, attendance at church services are lowest of any city in West Germany, with less than one percent of the people attending services. It seems obvious that BA-liners who live in this island of freedom surround ed by communist East Germany are too busy with their rebuilding and generally "leading the good life" to care about exercising their freedom to wor ship at public services. The message of Billy Graham's recent crusade, and that of this World Cong ress of Evangelism is not new to Ber- Uners. It is a city whose spiritual roots drew nourishment from the heritage of Martin Luther, and whose best known memorial is the bombed ruin of Kaiser Wilhelm Church. But, as one religious leader visiting here from America re marked this week, "The people have lived on the edge of danger so long that many have become indifferent both to danger and to God." Surely there is no greater contrast In "ways of life" in the world today than that on the opposite of "the wall". The free, energetic, proud, and smiling peo ple on the western side have made their section rise like a phoenix from the ashes of the war. He described other reasons why he believed the ener gy industry would be able to keep a breast of demand. Among these are production techniques that have made available billions of barrels of formerly unrecoverable reserves; refining me thods that can convert heavy crudes in to the highest grades of gasoline, jet fuels and diesel; and "supertankers" that have substantially reduced trans portation costs.
