B COMMENTS by Mary Alice Hasty In the year one thousand, nine hundred and forty-nine, Davie County held within itts boundaries several thousand Davie County held within its boundaries several thousand in the juiciest, most delicious sense of the word. Down here on the banks of the South Fork River we lived with the consuming passion of a single thought . . BEAT MOCKSVILLE!!!!! The desire to learn was almost completely displaced by the burning rivalry. The sports arena was the battle ground, and when the games were over the fight was usually carried out side. Why Mocksvilie? Well, the cry could have been BEAT ADVANCE, bat they were so darn good at n th«t * call to battle with them seemed rather futile, so we «ywentrated on the nearest school that provided the most equal competition. How we loved to hate Mocksvilie! The feeling was mutual, of course; Blood pressure at Mocksvilie High School would soar at the mention of "Cooleemee." In that year 1949, twenty-three of us graduated from Cooleemee High School. We had heard insidious rumors of a consolidated high school for the entire county, and with typical teenage Judgment, considered the prospect little better «!>■" death. No kidding. In the twinkling of a few years we found ourselves, amaz ingly enough, beating the bushes for votes to support a bond issue to build the very thing we had loathed with such childish fervor. Davie County High School is the greatest «h«"g ever hit Davie County J- Davie County Hospital not excepted. We can go to Salisbury, Winston-Salem, Statesville, etc., If we're sick. Our children have to go to the schools we provide for them. They have to be taught by the teachers we provide, too. The elementary schools our grandparents provided for their children are worn out. Their great-grandchildren are using the very same facilities, and the facilities are breaking down daily. Electrical circuits cannot carry the load demanded, and fuses keep blowing out.. . this is not only inconvenient .. . it's darned dangerous. Walls are cracking, water is seeping in, stairways are having to be used that shouldn't be ... and so on! The children of Davie County must go to school. We must provide the schools. The cost of building three excellent elmentary schools is actually LESS than the cost of remodeling what we now have. By combining the schools, Davie County will be in a position to attract more, and better qualified teachers. To the present faculty, Davie County is "home." What will it be to the faculty of, say, 1972? Will we be in a position to attract the best those looking for permanence or will we have to hire ones who are unable to find teaching positions elsewhere? Salary is not the deciding factor lf that were the case every teacher in Davie County would be teaching somewhere else.. The total school system from Administrative personnel on down will decide the issue And we, as citisens, will decide what the system is to be. H. D. Club To Hold Meeting The Cooleemee Home Dem onstration Club will meet on Friday night, March 17th, at 7:30 P. M. at the home of Mrs. Jim Frye on Main Street. North Cooleemee Baptist WMU Holds Meeting On Monday evening, the WMU of the North Cooleemee Baptist Church met at the home of Mrs. Bobby Russell for their regular monthly meeting. After the program was clos ed, the group was invited into the dining room where refreshments were served. Centering the table was large coconut cake in the form of an Raster rabbit and a cho colate cake in the shape of an Easter egg with white dec orations, these were baked by the hostess, Mrs. Russell. She also served individual small rabbit cakes, sandwiches shap ed like baby chicks, potato chips, pickles and coffee. The members enjoyed a social hour. David R.
