"We are certainly shy on experience this year as well as depth," Conger admitted, "and this is going to present us with a big problem. We certainly can't two platoon and a majority of our boys are going to have to go both ways." Conger, entering his second year as boss of the Rebels after a 5-5 mark last year, sees some bright spots on the club, however. He is highly pleased with the club's speed and quickness and hopes the aerial game will come around. "Steve Zimmerman should give us a fine running game at fullback and James Ijames is an excellent received with planty of speed," he said. "We've got to work on our passing game but I believe Craig Ward will come around." Conger figures East Rowan and South Iredell as the clubs to beat in the Northern Piedmont. "We have nine letterman back and have switched some of them to new positions to fill crucial holes," he said. "It's up to the new boys to come through at the other spots. Ward is currently battling David Poplin for the quarterback spot, with Bob Koontz and Mike Dalton waging a merry duel for the running back duties. Conger rates Bryant Smith a notch ahead of Joey Mason and Tony Seaford at the wingback. Zimmerman is rated among the better runners in the conference and is backed up by Robert Ridge. Up front, Allen Barger, a hard-hitting 215-pounder, is a fixture at center and is expected to be one of the stalwarts on defense. He is backed up by Paul Griffith and Ed Godwin. James Ijames, the track star, is a fixture at one of the end spots while Conger rates "everything equal" between Eddie Jones, R. C. Athey and Joe Harris in the fight for the other flanker role. Tackle, Conger admits, is a big problem but he is impressed with the work of the crew that includes Steve Lathan, Steve Blackwelder, Richard Crotts, Eddie Hen drix. Buck Hall and Buck Jones. At guard, Donnie Davis, Andy Andrews and John Carpenter are currently the top trio. Conger figures the punting game is all right, with Poplin and Paul Beaver the leading candidates, while Eddie Jones, Terry Cook and Davis are considered adequate in the place-kicking department. 1968 RESULTS Davie 12, Albemarle 27 Davie 6, North Stanly 7 Davie 6, East Rowan 7 Davie 21, C.
