That just may be our best bet around Cooleemee with the tele phone situation the way it is. Some poor guy is sent here from Marion, the home office I guess, to work a couple of days a week and boy, does he catch it. There are so many com plaints, he doesn't know where to begin, but he tries. Of course, it's impossible for him to clear up months of trouble* in a day or two. With more than a thousand telephones on the Western Caro lina system, you would think that we at least rated a full time serviceman and an office. Good grief. . . the local office was closed on such short notice, enclosed in the monthly bill, and no explanation was given as to what future plans were being made, if any. The entire situation is com pletely ridiculous. People de pend a great deal on the tele phone these days. In fact, it could be a matter of life and EktSKlwsfllfl i |r jPV ' V Itft ' 7 / ' mKtKm. / - rffinlrI*l 1 *1 * ™"*fi " - > . * ? ♦ Jf Everybody gets into the act, but that mall blackboard makes coloring a little tough. death in many cases. The entire community is very taihappy with the present set-up and some of the local business men and women signed a peti tion that has been sent to the North Carolina Utilities Com mission, complaining about such poor facilities. The letter, dated Monday and containing the signatures of 68 persons, was sent in duplicate to A. C. Tysinger Jr., district manager of the Western Caro lina Telephone Company at Marion which operates the Cooleemee system. The letter reads: "We the undersigned citizens of Cooleemee, would like to request the utilities commis sion, as """* as possible, to make an extensive evaluation of the telephone equipment and service in the Cooleemee area to include talks with previous employees . . . regarding the frequency of complaints, condi tion of equipment, procurement of supplies, etc. "It is our feeling that com mission on the telephones could be grossly improved. We have tolerated this situation for years and it is our feeling, since now the full-time repairman has been replaced by a part time repairman, this condition is going to get worse."
