Murder-Suicide Man Guns Down Neighbor As She Returns From Work COOLEEMEE —An elderly re Cooleemee man shot and killed a woman neighbor when she c* returned from work at Fiber St Industries late last night, then * turned the weapon and killed himself. Dr. B. L. Richards, Davie County corn oner, ruled that Ernest (Shag) Sain, about 70, murdered Mrs. Peggy Messick, 37, and then committed suicide. There was no apparent motive in the killings of the Davie Street neighbors. Dr. Richards said that Mrs. Messick apparently had just arrived at her residence about 11:90 p.m. Thursday when she was slain. Mrs. Messick, whom Dr. Richards said was divorced from ho* husband, apparently started to go into ho- house, where her sons, aged 17 and six, were alseep. Dr. Richards quoted the older son as saying he beard two shots and his mother scream. Then there were two more shots and another scream. Mrs. Messick's body was found in her front yard near the porch. Sain's body was found about SO feet away in the front vard and near the front porch of his residence. Mrs. Messick died instantly, a bullet hitting her in the left upper part of the chest just above tne heart. Sain was rushed to Davie County Hospital at Mocksville and was being transferred to Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem when he died en Rescue Squad To Present Gospel Sing The Davie County Rescue Squad will present a special gospel singing with the Har vesters Quartet and the Philomels Quartet on Friday, June 5.
