To Speak
At Picnic
North Carolina Attorney
General Robert Morgan will be
the featured speaker at the 90th
annual Masonic Picnic to be
held Thursday, August 13th, at
Clement Grove.
The announcementof the
speaker was made this week by
George W. Martin, Program
Chairman.
Mr. Morgan, a native of
Lillington, N. C., graduated
from East Carolina College with
a B. S. degree in 1947 and the
Wake Forest Law School in
1950. While a student at Wake
Forest Law School he filed for
the office of Clerk of Superior
Court of Harnett County and
was elected. He served in that
position for four years and then
resigned to enter the private
practice of law.
He is a member of the local,
State and American Bar
Associations. He is a Mason and
Rotarian.
He served as State Senator in
the N. C. General Assembly of
1955, 1959, 1963, 1965 and 1967.
He was President Pro Tem of
the Senate in 1965. While a
member of the Senate he was
recognized as a forceful and
effective advocate of jail
reform, mental health
programs, better facilities for
higher education, and
numerous other programs.
Mr. Morgan won the
Democratic nomination for the
office of Attorney General in
May of 1968 and was elected to
that office in the General
Election of November 5, 1968.
He is now serving his third
term as Chairman of the East
Carolina Board of Trustees. He
is Lieutenant Commander in the
Naval Reserve, a member of
the Baptist Church.
Married to the former Katie
Earle Owen of Roseboro, N. C.,
they have two young daughters,
Mary and Margaret, and a
foster son, Rupert.
June 20 Election
564 Register Here To Vote
On Incorporation Question
There are 564 people registered to vote in the June
20 election regarding the incorporation of Cooleemee.
Saturday was the last day of registration.
The election will be held at the Cooleemee Ele
mentary School from 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Saturday,
June 13, is challenge day.
This special election required new registration of
the people living within the proposed temporary
boundaries of the town. Mrs. Annette Anderson, regis
trar, said that this is the biggest registration ever held
for Cooleemee. In her estimation, Mrs. Anderson said
there were problably a little over 600 people eligible to
register to vote in this election.
On the day of election, voters will mark a ballot
"yes" for incorporation or "no" against incorporation.
They will also choose from among 11 candidates for
town councilmen on a separate bllot. Dr. Eamey Kemp,
chairman of the Davie County Board of Elections, has
noted that voters may choose one, two, three, four or
five candidates for town council on their ballots. Or the

The Guy Fosters And Jock

voter may even choose not to vote for any of the
candidates.
The three highest vote getters will serve until the
regular town election in May, 1973. The next two highest
vote getters will serve until May 1971.
In the May 1971 election, and in all future elections,
voters will be required to vote for candidates for all
offices, otherwise, the ballot will not be counted for any
candidates.
Candidates for town council are Flake Blackwood,
Denny Creason, Mrs. Mauriel Gude, Charles Church,
Ward Setzer, Jackie Morton, Hayden Beck, Aubrey
Wensil, Mrs. Peggy Foster, William Gales and Jerry
Bailey.
If the incorporation fails, the vote for councilmen will
be voided.
If the vote to incorporate passes, ten of the 11
candidates for the council have statcdthat they would
not support a tax rate to exceed sl.lO per SIOO, which is
the present county tax rate.

Fosters. Jock used to take toys to bed with him every
night, until he got into the habit of taking toys that
squeaked and made noise during the middle of the
night. The Fosters are noted around the community for
their lovely garden in the summer, and Mrs. Foster
does a lot of canning of garden vegetables.

Pool Opening
Delayed Again
The opening of the swimming
pool at the Recreation Center
here has been delayed for the
second time, due to the elec
trical wiring not being com
pleted by the contractors.
The pool, originally scheduled
to open June 11, will be delayed
until sometime next week. The
exact day is not known at this
time.
Hie pool will be filled with
water this week and hopefully,
the wiring on the new filter
system will be completed in to
open next week.
