Despite Loss Of Tax Base,
Davie Tax Rate The Same
MOCKSVILLE Davie
County Commissioners have
held the tax line at sl.lO per SIOO
valuation, despite the loss of $6
million in taxable property last
year.
Commissioners met Monday
and set the tax rate, the same as
last year, with an SB7 million tax
base.
The tax base is essentially the
same despite the fact that the
county lost ss>4 million in
taxable valuation with the
closiiitDf Burlington Industries
at Cooleemee, about a half
million with the closing of the R.
J. Reynolds Tobacco Company
storage area in the county, and
some taxable valuation with the
phasing out of the Haynes
Company warehouse.
The tax base remains
essentially the same as last
year, despite these losses, with
the expansion of the Ingersoll-
Rand Company, numerous
others but more modest
business expansions, and new
home construction.
Total budget for the 1970-71
fiscal year calls for
$1,138,720.14.
Commissioners yesterday
rejected all five bids for the
demolition of the county jail,
Garden In A Grill
which has been condemned by
the state jail inspector.
County Manager John Barber
said the bids ranged from $3,500
to $4,700. He said that com
missioners were of the general
agreement that all bids were too
high.
Commissioners, after they
rejected the bids, voted to leave
the buiMing standing until they
could figure out some practical
solution.
Persons who contract with
individual county residents for
the pkkpup of garbage will have
to figure out some way of
disposal of the refuse.
Pool To Close Saturday, Sunday
..The Swimming pool at the Cooleemee Recreation
Center will be closed Saturday, and Sunday, July 11, and
12th for vacation.
Anyone Interested in signing ap for swimming lessons
should come by the Center nnd register on Monday or
Tuesday, Jnly 13, and 14th.
At present, the contractors
burn the garbage, but this is now
illegal due to state ' law
regarding pollution. The law
went into effect on July 1. but
permits a state-wide grace
period to give various persons
involved time to work out
practical solutions.
Davie County is one of three
counties which has formed the
Air Quality Control Board.
Surry and Forsyth are the other
two counties.
The board plans future public
hearings in all three counties so
that all persons involved in the
matter will be better informed
and solutions found.
