New Program Design*
To Reduce Cadi Crops
The biggest payments under the
new farm program will be for dtanct''
ing land from soil-depleting crops
into tiie production of soil-conserv
ing or improving crop*
For taking land out of cotton the
rate of payment will be around $12
an acre, while the rate for tobacco
will be around $40 an acre, depending
upon the average productivity of
the land. ?
The rate of payment for wheat,
corn, and other soil-depleter* will be
determined in the near future, and
will probably vary with each ?arm
according to its fertility, said Dean
I. O. Schaub, of ^State College. ?
The maximum diversions on which
payments will be made are 35 per
cent of the cotton base, 30 per cent
of the tobacco base, 20 per cent of
the peanut base, and 15 per cent of
the base acreage of other noil-deplet
ers.
A smaller payment will also be
made for growing soil-building crops
or carrying out certain soil-improve
ment practices such as terracing fof
erosion control or planting forest
trees, the dean said.
There are two things a grower
must do to earn this soil building
payment.
First, he must put in soil-conserv
ing crops, or devote to soil-conserv
ing practices, an amount of land
equal to at least 20 per cent of his
base acreage of depleting crops.
Each acre devoted to soil-conserv
ing crops or practices will make the
grower eligible for 1 in a soil-build
ing payment, unless the rate is
changed later, but it will not auto
matically earn this payment
Second, to earn the payment, the
grower must raise soil-building crops
or carry out certain soil-building
practices. *
Under the program, certain crops
and practices have been classified as
soil-conserving, while certain others
are known as soil-building.

Questions Answered

?
QUESTION: Is it necessary to
1 use cod liver oil in chick mashes dur
ing the spring when green feed is
available ?
ANSWER: If the green feed is
abundant and succulent and the birds
are on range a good part of each day,
it is probable that sufficient vitamins
would be secured. However, condi
tions which may be brought about by
lack of sunshine and the scarcity
or the coarseness of the green feed,
make it desirable to fortify the mash
with a reinforcing oil. This is really
an insurance for the chicks and is
well worth the cost.
QUESTION: How will the soil
depleting base be determined under
the conservation program ? '
ANSWER: The harvested acreage
of all crops in 1935 with the excep
tion of cotton, peanuts, and tobacco,
will be determined and necessary ad
justments made from these figures.
Where a base for cotton, peanuts, and
tobacco has already been established,
this will be used in place of the 1935
acreage. A separate base will be
established for these crops, but all
other soil depleting crops will be
combined in arriving at the base.
QUESTION: How can I get rid
of Jice that are infesting my dairy
herd?
A-NSWUK: me following reme
dies have proved effective: (1) A
four percent solution of creolin ap
plied with a spray pump or brush;
(2) cotton seed oil and kerosene,
equal parts; (3) ground sabedilla
seed and flowers of sulphur, equal
parts, applied in powder form. There
ar^ also several standard dip solu
tion^ on the market, but when these
are used directions on the container
should be closely followed. Oils
should not be used in very warm or
very cold weather. When powder is
used the hair should first be clipped
from the affected parts and the pow
der applied only on the clipped places.
A second treatment should be given
within fifteen days.
