INSPIRED TO CARRT ON ..
Gratitude end pride were mingled
with the feeling of profound sorrow,
which friends here shared with the
Monk family as hundreds, white and
black, whom he knew by their first
names, stood with bowed heads and
sad hearts Wednesday, at the-bier of
James Yancey Monk ... gratitude for
having known one of Nature's noble
men and called him friend, and pride
in the honor he brought to Farmvile
as a progressive citizen, said in his
salient service as leader in bringing
prestige to the Farmville tobacco
market
It was daring the first decade of
this century, 1907, to be exact, that
two brothers, A. C. and J. Y. Monk,
natives of Durham county, came to
Farmville in the interest of the to
bacco industry. "A. C." as buyer and
"J. Y." as warehouseman, have been
outstanding factors in the rapid de
velopment and success of the Farm
ville market.
Believing that Farmville was des
tined to become a great marketing
center, "J. Y." advocated and bent
all of his efforts towards a consist
ent improvement and development of
marketing facilities until he saw a
model tobacco market brought into
existence.
A man of natural cordiality, en
thusiasm, and without peer in the
realm of his activity, he worked tire
lessly in the interest of this com
munity and in whining for the mark
et the recognition he sought, he won
the esteem and love of those for
whom he labored. A loving husband
and father and a friend to man, he
indeed lived in "a house by the side
of the road."
Undergoing examinations and
treatments at various medical insti
tutions for the past several months,
he was at last brought home to spend
his remaining days in the community
he loved so well, and in which he was
so well beloved. There was a con
stant stream of visitors to his home,
who, admitted at his request, even
when those In charge of the sick
room deemed it unwise, will remem
ber for months to come his smile and
cordial handclasp.
While we deplore the passing of
such a grand man and valuable citi
zen, wa believe that his spirit will
abide here and will inspire those
who follow after him, and the citi
zenship as a whole, to plan and sin
cerely strive for glorious continu
ance in building for this community
an enduring and prosperous market,
the foundations of which have been
so splendidly laid by this pioneer
warehouseman.
