Presbyterian Auxiliary
The Presbyterian Auxiliary met at
the home of Mr*. E. S. Coatee, on
Monday afternoon.
The president, Mrs. Will H. Moore,
presided over the business session,
during which announcement was
made that a covered-dish luncheon
would be served at the home of Mrs.
J. M. Hobgood on Tuesday, Jan. 29th
in further observance of Foreign
Mission Study, and that Dr. jr W.
Hassell would be gueet speaker of
the occasion. Mrs. Moore, also, an
nounced that an invitation had been
extended the ladies of the Ballard's j
Presbyterian Auxiliary to attend.
Mrs. J. M. Mewbom presented the
program for the afternoon, which
was' based on the subject, "Africa,"
and in which she told of the work of
Presbyterian missionaries in that
country.
Mrs. Coates closed the meeting
with prayer.
Mrs. Paul Allen was a visitor at
the meeting.
Presbyterian Junior*
Mrs. J. C. Corbett was hostess to
the Presbyterian Juniors and visitors,
Mrs. George B. Moore, Miss Patricia
Corbett and Preston Bundy, on Wed
nesday.
Roy Moore selected for a devotion
al" reading, the 103rd Psalm, and Mrs.
Corbett began the study of Foreign
Missions by relating the story of the
life of David Livingstone, noted mis
sionary to Africa, which began
series of discussions, by members, in
an open forum.
The 100th Psalm was repeated in
unison in closing the meeting.
.Gingerbread and spiced tea were
enjoyed during the social period.
With all her experience, every
woman expects to do better when she
marries a second time, and some do.
Often the happiest moment of the
whole social evening is when a tire
some guest announces he must leave.
Secretary of Agriculture Anderson

the "responsibilities" of plentiful pro

Larger farms will increase the
farm income and expansion of rural
electrification will improve farm
housing, Extension Service home
management specialists say.

BIRD NOTES
Jess Spencer read an article at the
Bird Club meeting, Saturday, from
the National Geographic on the Paur
aque, which is the Mexican equival
ent of our whippoorwill. Like the
latter, its enormous; eyes, large
mouth arrayed with long stiff bris
tles, and soft plumage equip it per-'
fectly for catching insects- on the
wing at night. It also resembles its
northern relative m the intricate
pattern of its feather markings,
which run the gamut of odd-shaped
spots, streaks, bars, and finely pen
ciled vermiculate lines.
I
Rusty-brown, black, and tawny pre
dominate on .the upper parts of the
bird, and the breast is softly barred
with soft gray over a buffy ground
color. A white patch across the mid
dle of the wing feathers and the
white outer tail feathers shows up
conspicuously when the bird flies.
Its insistent cry "par-a-que?' or the
English version "where-are-you?"
can be heard from dusk till dawn,
almost continuously.
The writer of this succeeded in
capturing a Pauraque by blinding it
with a flashlight, but allowed it to
escape after examination.
Pecan roll cake was served.
North Carolina nurserymen have a
slogan which says that a home is not
a home until fruit is planted oh the
site.
Final plans are completed for the
cooperative strawberry meetings at
Tabor City and Chadbourn January
30 and 31.
Cash awards totaling $3,000 will
be distributed to North Carolina
fanners in the Extension Service's
second annual five-acre cotton con
I test.
