BIRD CLUB
Hie Fairy Wrens of Australia or
"Hie Blue Birds of Happiness" were
studied at Saturday's meeting of the
Bird Club with Charles Greene
reader.
Of all the numerous distinctive
birds of Australia, such as the world
famous parrots and cockatoos, honey
eaters bowers, flycatchers, whistlers
and pardalotes, the Fairy Wrens are
said to surpass them all for dainti
ness, grace and beauty. Nothing in
the nature world is more fascinating
than these sprightly little feathered
jewels flashing in the sunlight or
playing and chattering in a setting
bright with sweet-scented flowering
plants.
Hie Blue Fairy Wren is an elegant
little gentleman with an electric blue
head, blue bade and dark blue tail,
iridescent purplish breast, brown
wings and white underparts.
There are thirteen species of Fairy
Wrens but the Blue Wren is the
favorite and is most closely associat
ed with the home life of the country.
He is common in gardens, both public
and private, in the heart of cities and
towns.
The nrrmal breeding season begins
towards the end of July. The male
assiduously helps with the nest build
ing and later with the brooding.
When not assisting in these tasks he
is -on guard near the nest and attacks
with fury any bird that encroaches
on his territory.-.
Thick and thorny vegetation, hedge,
a cluster of vines or thick clumps of
grass are usually selected as nesting
sites. The nests are dome-shaped
structures with an entrance at the
side slightly protected by a hood.
They are composed of grasses, pieces
of bark fiber, rootlets, cobwebs and
cocoons and are cosily lined with
feathers, fur, hair and wool.
Three or four eggs are laid which
are fleshy or reddish white, dotted
with pale red or different shades of
reddish brown. The eggs take about
14 days to hatch. At three weeks
old, the young are ready to leave
the ne$t. ,
What a lot of character there is in
a wren's tail! Its carriage means
everything to its owner's appearance.
When it is held hi its usual upright
position few birds look more spright
ly or fascinating. But they are de
jected looking little mites when the
tail is dropped as when they attempt
to draw attention from their young
sters in the nest The tail is longer
than the bird.
They are very fond of bathing and
enjoy splashing in a bird bath but
their favorite bath is taken among
the leaves or grasses when sprinkled
with dew or wet with rain. They hop
and splash about in the dewdvops un
til thoroughly wet and then preen
themselves dry in the sun.
Their food consists entirely of in
sects and larvae and one family of
wrens will eat hundreds of such pests
each day. It is estimated that a
young wren eats mora than its own
wright in food every twenty-four
hours. Many pictures of wrens in
their different colors were studied by
the Bird Club members.
A long hike through the woods to
tiie creek was taken during which'
many birds were observed.
