LITERARY CLUB
The Literary Club was deJightftilly
entertained by Miss Tabitha DeVis
conti on Wednesday afternoon at the
home of Mrs. Zeb Whitehurst Sea
sonal flowers were used in artistic
decoration in the living and dining
rooms.
Mrs. W. M. Willis, president, pre
sided over a short business period
after which Miss Mamie Davis read
a philosophical article from the
Clubwoman. Mrs. Haywood Smith,
program chairman for the afternoon,
introduced as her guest speaker, Mrs.
Bennett Fields.
Mrs. Fields spoke interestingly on
Home Demonstration Club Work, giv
ing its fundamental aim?Betterment
of rural homes and the fitting of the
farm woman for the life she lives;
the advantages of its reading course;
the universality of its scope? no har
riers as to race, color, creeds, etc.
She proudly announced that all of
the hundred counties of North Caro
lina have Home Demonstration
Agents and that there are forty-two
Negro Home Demonstration Agents
in our State. Mrs. Fields briefly
sketched the organization and growth
of our own Club, the building of the
Club House on the Farmville-Foun
tain Highway, and in closing remark
ed on the pride we have in our own
County Agent, Miss Verona Lee Joy
ner, and the progress made under
her administration.
Following adjournment the hostess,
assisted by Mrs. . Haywood Smith,
served strawberry shortcake, after
which she gave an invitation to the
dining room where Mrs. Willis, from
a beautiful appointed table, served
coffee, cheese-crax and nuts.
B & B CLUB
Mrs. C. S. Hotchkiss was a gracious
hostess Friday afternoon entertaining
members of the BAB Club and spec
ial guests including Mrs. John D.
Dixon, Mrs. Ernest N. Petteway, Mrs.
R. C. Copenhaver, Mrs. Harry Harper,
Mrs. Robert Lee Smith, Mrs. George
V. Monk, who played, and Mrs.
George M. Allen, who was a refresh
ment guest - i
Prior to the games the hostess
served refreshing coca-colas with
party sandwiches, pickles, nuts and
individual cakes. Pink rosea, paasies
end sweetpeas were used in decorat
ing the home.
In the three progressions, Mrs. R.
T. Williams and Mrs. Frank K. Allen
tallied high scores, among members
and Mrs. George V. Monk, among the
guests. Mrs. Monk was presented
Dorothy Perkins bath powder and
Mrs. George M. Allen was remem
bered with a hand-painted rose glass
vase.
MERRY MATRONS
Mrs. Wesley R. Willis graciously
entertained the Merry Matrons Club
ah its final meeting of the season on
Tuesday afternoon, having as special
guests Mrs. M. V. Horton and Mrs.
E. S. Castes. Arrangements of roses,
larkspur, verbena sad psnsiee lent
added attraction to the home.
Mrs. A. W. Bobbitt, president, pre
sided over a brief business session
when the dob voted to leave with the
program committee, the selection of
s series at programs for 1946-47.
A delightful program was present
ed by Mia. M. V. Jones sad her
daughter, Betsy. Mrs. Jones read a
sketch of the life and work of Fran*
Schubert, after which de conducted
a clever musical contest. The wins

had safeguarded her security in her
affliction.
He beauty of her life and charac
ter was manifested in the maimer in
which she bora her suffering. She
was conscious ell the while that she
was engaged in a losing conflict,
physically, but this seemed never to
depress her. There was never any
sign of her questioning the Provi
dence of God; dhe seemed to rely
upon the promise "we . know that all
things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are
the called according to His purpose."
To be in her company during these
last yean of affliction you were
made to feel that she had an experi
ence akin to that of Raul, as related
in 2nd Corinthians, 12:9, "and He
said unto met my grace is sufficient
for thee,, for my strength is made
perfect hi weakness; most gladly,
therefore, will I rather glory to my
infirmities, that the power of Christ
may rest upon me."
Truly "a mother to Israel" has fal
len and "her children rise up and call
her blessed."
