Farm Bureau Federation at a meeting m Raleigh voted to recom mend that the State Board of Agri culture keep the chlorine content of field tobacco fertilizer at a maximum of three per cent and that of tobac co top-dresser at five per cent. The meeting was called by Assist ant Commissioner of Agriculture D. S. Coltrane to obtain information on the wishes of farmers regarding fer tilizer grades which will be adopted by the State Board of Agriculture. In explaining the recommenda tions of the Experiment Station, Dr. Ralph Cummings, assistant director, pointed out that the Tdhacco Work Conference, which is composed of J agronomists from several Southern states, had agreed two per cent chlo rine should be the maximum used in tobacco field fertilizers except in unusual circumstances, when it might be permissable to go up to 3 per cent. He added that the five per cent chlorine content which has been permitted in tobacco top-dressings was two per cent over the maximum regarded as . favorable and was per mitted only to offset diminished sup-, plies of sulphate of potash. While there was some feeling at the meeting that fertilizer companies should be permitted a wider range in their own experiments, it was the consensus of the group that the quality of the tobacco being, pro duced should be given first con sideration. T. W. Allen, of Creedmoor, speak ing for the Grange, said: "I am ab solutely opposed to our appropriat ing large sums of money to the N., C. Experiment Station, and then to disregard its findings." G. T. Scott, director of the State Production arid Marketing Adminis tration, said that although quantity has meant much during the past two ye?rs, "the time is not far distant when quality will come back into its own agaiiw" Dr. Cummings expressed the opin ion that sufficient sulphate of potash is coming into North Carolina to care, for the needs of tobacco and consequently, it should not be necessary to Increase the chlorine content of tobacco fertilizer if this sulphate of potash supply is given correct distribution. . Carl HMa, Farm Bureau official of Walstonburg, said that the ferti lizer industry "has made great strides in providing the farmers with better fertilizer, and I think we should permit the manufacturers some freedom in formulating their tobacco grades." However, Alonzo ** Edwards of Hookerton, legislator and Farm Bq j-eau leader, expressed the fear that fertilizer companies would devote too much attention, to the quantity of to bacco produced instead of to the quality of this -tobacco, and this position was agreed to by W. W. Eagles of Macclesfield, president of the State Farm Bureau, who re marked that "we must look to bacco from the long-run basis. NOTICE!
