BROWNIES ORGANIZED A Brownie troop, an auxiliary group, of the local Girl Scoot organi-1 ration waa formed on Wednesday I afternoon at the home of Mrs. George I Farr, the adult leader. The troop will be composed of 15 girls from the ages of seven through ten. The aims, ideals and activities have the same basic objectives as the Intermediate Girl Scouts. I Mrs. R. T. Williams, a leader of I Troop 2, gave an interesting sum mary of the Girl Scout movement and how the Brownies were first organix ed. I Charter members of the new troop are Martha Holmes, who was elected leader; Theodora Albritten, secretary; Ann Morgan, treasurer; Im T. Lewis, Nan Williams, Marion Pickett, Jane Russell, Blanche Satterthwaite, I Johnnie Janer Joyner, Faye Mewborn, Ann Pollard and Sybil Crumpler. Only three more members can be taken into this troop. After the program the girls played games, sang favorite songs, repeated the Scout Promise and enjoyed | munching apples. BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION Clarabelle Flanagan, attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. "Flan agan, celebrated her ninth birthday with a theater party on last Thurs day afternoon. ? Following the movie the guests were invited to the Flanagan home for refreshments, consisting of cake decorated in blue and white, ice cream and salted nuts, served from ] the dining room table which bore at tractive blue and white decorations and was softly lighted by blue tapers. Games were played on the lawn. Guests included Ellen Norris Spen cer, Jane Russell, Theodora Albrit ton, Ann Morgan, Ann Pollard, Janet Atkinson, Lou Taylor Lewis, Sybil | Crumpler and Faye Mewborn. Street er Sheppard an Joint hostess, Friday afternoon, was an interesting and constructive talk by Miss Elisabeth Davis concerning "Our National li brary" in Washington, D. C. She discussed its orgin, growth and de velopment and the varied services rendered by it to the people of this and other nations, illustrating her talk with beautiful exterior and in terior views of the building. Miss Davis also told about her visits to libraries in Western North Carolina. Mrs. W. Jesse Moye made an. an nouncement relative to the district meeting which will be^held in Ply mouth, October 11. The club mem ben discussed the awarding of a citizenship prise to be given to the pupil in the high school who had con tributed most to the upbuilding of the school and community as a whole. Mrs. C. W. Blackwood was elected chairman for securing subscriptions to the "North Carolina Clubwoman." Delicious cookies, ice cream and nuts were enjoyed by those present, including Mrs. Z. B. T. Cox and Mrs. Sam Bundy, who were welcomed as new members. Exquisite arrangements of crotala ria, zinnas and false dragonhead were on the tables and mantels throughout the home. Literary Club A meeting, featured by a delight ful and entertaining program, was held, Wednesday afternoon, by the Literary Club, at the home of the president, Miss Elizabeth Davis, in which lovely yellow chrysanthemums, pink dahlias and red roses were ar ranged with artistic effect. Following the des sert course, after dinner coffee was poured by Mrs. F. M. Davis, mother of the hostess, from a beautifully ap pointed table in the hall. Special guests of the hostess were Mrs. E. W. Holmes and Miss Rose mary Holmes, Mrs. Nannie Moye Humphrey and Miss Edna Robinson. Jr. Woman's Club The Junior Woman's Club met, Tuesday afternoon, with Mrs. Tommy S. Ryon at her suburban home, which was beautifully decorated with early fall flowers. Mrs. J. T. Nolan presided and led in the Junior Club Woman's pledge, with which the meeting was opened. During the business session, the club voted to contribute to a foreign scholarship; Mrs. R. T. Williams gave a report of the recent birthday party held by the Girl Scouts, which was sponsored by the club, and told of plans for forming a Brownie troop, and members were reminded by the president of* the 16th district, Mrs. Jesse Moye, who is a rfiember of this group, of the district meeting to be held in Plymouth, October 11. The meeting was closed with the Club Collect. During an enjoyable social period, the hostess served vanilla ice cream, topped with strawberries, and black chocolate cake. Mrs. Eli Joyner, Jr., and Mrs. Robert T. Monk were special guests of the hostess at this time. Contract Club Mrs. W. Leslie Smith was a graci low, received eolation.
