Bailentine, Horton and Albright Are
Expected to Join State Treasurer
In Race To Succeed R.
Gregg Cherry
?t
Charles M. Johnson, State trea
surer, who has made no bones about
the fact that he was going to run for
governor in. 1948, officially an
nounced his candidacy yesterday and
pried the lid off a race which is ex
pected to find several other outstand
ing North Carolinians competing
for the Democratic nomination.
Olla Bay Boyd of Pinetown has
already announced. Others expected
to join Johnson and Boyd as major
contenders are R. Mayne Albright,
Wilkins P. Horton and W. B. Ballen
tine. who now serves as lieutenant
fmM
governor.- .
Mr. Johnson's statement announc
ing his candidacy follows:
"This is an announcement of my
candidacy for Governor of North
Carolina subject to the Democratic
Primary of 1948. It is intended only
as a statement of my candidacy.
In the months ahead, I shall give
full information as to my aims and
policies.
"As State Treasurer, as Director
of Local Government, and as a mem
ber of many of the most important
State Boards and Commissions, I
have had an opportunity to learn
the workings of the State Govern
ment and to know the problems and
needs of the people of North Caro
lina. I believe that my experience
and training in the business of
government, on both the state and
local jfovernment levels, will be of
value~in the years just ahead.
"If elected, I will be free to as
sume the office of Governor with
only one commitment?a promise to
do what I believe to be best for all
the pebple of the State.
"While I will not go into detail
as to my prbgram at this time, I
do wish to make one simple state
ment which I hope to make the key
note of the service I desire to rend
er. I shall always keep in mind
that government is justiifed only by
the high character of service ren
ered by its officials as servants of
the people and seek to emphasize
the human as well as material values
