BIRTHDAY GREETINGS
Tuesday marked the passing of an
other mile-stone in the life of Miss
Annie Perkins, whose Christian
character and outstanding work in
the educational system have influen
ced two generations in Farmville and
will be felt for yean to come.
It was typical of the fine lady that
she should make her birthday a day
of service, as her life has been. In
the morning, die taught Bible school;
in the afternoon she attended a
church meeting and that evening she
was one of the hostesses at a circle
meeting.
The author of the following lines
is unknown but the motto seems to be
the one by which Miss Annie Perkins
has patterned her life:
"Count that day lost whose low de
scending sun,
Views from thy hand no worthy
action done."

To the Editor:
The influence of the press on pub
lic opinion was again clearly demon
strated during the past year. Our
public schools were opened last Sep
tember by employing hundreds of
teachers who were not certified. Many
vacancies were not filled then and
are not filled today. The public, how
ever, at that time was not aware of
this crisis in education.
You and your colleagues set to
work. You gave abundant* space t<j
true stories concerning the true situ
ation. With editorial pen in hand and
coats removed, you joined, the cru
sade and sougft to awaken an
apathetic public. That you met
with some success is evidenced by
the legislative action of our recent
General Assembly. Without your ag
gressive support the teachers would
have received no more than a 20 per
cent increase, if, indeed that much.
This letter, therefore, is to thank you
for every story you carried and
every word you wrote.
We are especially graceful for
your assistance while the 1947 Legis
lature was in session as well as for
your continued support now that
Federal Aid hearings are being held
in Washington. Teachers are deep
ly indebted to you and to your news
paper.
You know, of coarse, that the
crisis has not ended. We shall be
made aware of its continuance when
our schools opsn in September. Thou
sands of North Carolina hoys and
