Marshall H. Barney, manager of
the Becky Mount office of the Social
Security Administration, calls atten
tion to the fact that there may be
people in this section who are losing
payments of old-age and survivors
insurance because they Bare not filed
claim for benefits. Some of them
are young widows of insured work
ers; some are the children of deceas
ed workers and some are aged men
or women. The Social Security Act
requires that a claim jmat be filed
before benefits are paid.
Mr. Bamey explained that In addi
tion to the monthly benefits, payable
to the insured worker who retires at
age 66, or after, the old-age and sur
vivors insurance system provides
.monthly benefits for his wife, if She
if 66 years old or over and to his
children under age IB. Monthly
benefits are payable to the widow of
an insured worker who dies, regard
less of age, provided she has in her
care, his children under 18. Old-agp
and survivors insurance may be paid
to insured worker's widow, if she is
65 or more, or when she reaches 66

Array Air Force Has
. Life Saving Branch
? ? ?.
There is A branch of the Army Air
Force that is in existence today sole
ly to save lives. Its personnel con
stantly undergo training and devise
new and better means of locating
missing aircraft and rescuing Sur
vivors. This branch of the Air Force
is The Air Rescue Service.
Air Rescue Squadron "A," Bta
tiqned at Pope Field, Fort Bragg, is
responsible tor~ locating missing air
craft and rescuing survivors in
North Carolina, South Carolina, Vir
ginia, Maryland, Delaware, and West
Virginia, and in parts of Georgia,
Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio,
Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
The squadron uses a variety of air
craft including the B-17 flying fort
ress with a droppable sea-going life
raft, the C-47 Skytrain, the L-6 Sen
tinel, the PBY and the SSkorsky heli
copter which recently played such ?
prominent role" in the rescue of seven
men who parachuted from a burning
B-17 over the jungles of Nicaragua.
On Air Force Day, August 1, the
Air Force Association will sponsor
a display Of the nation's' airpower.
Some of the rescue techniques,' as
used by ARS, will be demonstrated
for the public at Air Force Day open
house at Pope Field. There will be
? display of thd various types of. sur
vival equipment ahd air-to-ground
communication. In this demonstra
tion the public will actually hear,,
oyer a public address system, conver
sation between the ARS. jeep on the
ground and an ARS aircraft aloft.
All squadron "A" aircraft will be
on display and the rescue demonstra
tion will include the dropping of a
mercy bomb and rescue of aft injur
ed man, dropping of a seven-man
rubber life raft by a C-4T, and tha
apectacplar rescue by hoist by heli
copter.

insect life can be' given when* it Is
known that at least 400 different
species of insects thrive on members
of the willow family with over 300
iiVing on pines, firs, /larchs and
spruces. It can be readily seen that
no farmer could produce a crop with
out birds.
Often people , wonder how much
good it does to encourage birdlife
to destroy insects. "The answer is
obvious when itjs learned that in 24
hours insect larvae eat 200 times
their own weight,t Many larvae just
before changing to the adult form
have increased in siae nearly ton
thousand times."
Until about a century ago there
were no laws to protect birds because
it was not realised that they were
needed In every field, orchard and
garden. Today there are not only
laws for their protection hut bird
preserves where scientists and other
folks study ornithology.
The club members watchgd a fath

from the feed box and gazed at the

blackened paper. Apples were en
