MONTHLY PAYMENTS BEING MADE IN ROGKY MOUNT AREA Monthly benefits totalling $33,496 were paid to 2568 residents of the 16 counties of Beaufort,' Bertie, Dare, Edgecombe, Greene, Halifax, Hert fort, Hyde, Lenoir, Martin, Nasb, Northampton, Pitt, Tyrrell, Wash ington and Wilson, in Federal old age and survivors insurance pay ments in the month, of June, Mr. Barney, manager of the Social Secu rity administration field office at Rocky Mount has announced. How ever, he is concerned over the fact that many others are losing benefits because they failed to 'file a claim for them. He emphasised the fact that payments under Federal old age and survivors insurance are npt au tomatic. A claim must be filed with the Social ?ecuritir Administration before payment can be made. With the United States well into the reconversion period, the Social Security Administration has not ex perienced as great an upsweep in the number of claims filed as some people had predicted for the period when the high employment of war years began to drop off. Mr. Bar ney pointed out, however, .that there are many people who would be draw ing old-age and survivors insurance payments if they realized that they were eligible. His belief is borne out by the fact that a substantial num ber of people who do file a claim find that they have lost at least one month's check by not filing prompt ly For the nation as a whole in the month of June, the Treasury depart ment paid out $36,071,472 in monthly benefits under this program. Mr. Barney explained that this total wai the amount actually paid in June Many others have filed' claims and would be receiving monthly pay ments if they were not earning more than $14.99 a month af jobs in com merce and industry.
