Because of various special prob lems that are involved in the mar keting of early Irish potatoes from the Southeastern States, a study of these problems-and ways to correct thera. will be undertaken under the Research and Marketing Act as ? cooperative project between the U. S. Department of Agriculture and the Agricultural ?Experiment Stations of Alabama, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. The work will be supervised by H. M. Love of the Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station at Blacksburg, O. C. Stine of the Bureau of Agri cultural Economics, and D. P. Fisher of the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils and Agricultural Engineering. In some areas of the South Irish potatoes, are a highly important crop and many fanpero depend on them for the greater part of their income. Production and marketing costs are relatively high and because the crop is normally marketed whan imma ture, it is susceptibly -to rapid spoil age which results not only in waste of an important food product but in losses to growers and increased costs to consumers. Plans are to sample the condition of potatoes as they are dug and load ed into trucks at the field, at thi grading and shipping points, and a gain at the wholesale market So far as practical, some of the potatoes will be f >llowed through the whole sale market to retail stores and con sumers in order to get a -complete ?I to HH torn from other area*.
