" '"g* ""l11 DUE* AND CAROLINA NROTC STUDENTS TO TAKE CRUISE - Naval ROTC students at the Uni versity of North Carolina and Duke University will be among the 3656 Naval ROTC midshipmen who will cruise from West Coast Porte this summer as part of their training for officers’ commissions in the Navy and Marine Corps. These midshipmen) who are getting their college education and naval training at unite established at 62 colleges and universities throughout the nation, will assemble at San Fran cisco about June 23. They will sail from there a few days later for cruises to various Pacific ports. Of the 3665 midshipmen, 3236 are studying for commissions in the reg ular U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Corps. The others are training for commissions in the Naval Reserve. Approximately 1970 students of senior and sophomore classes, all of whom are training for regular cojn* missions, are scheduled to depart from San Francisco on June 26, in the battleship USS IOWA and the mod — light cruisers USS Pasadena, USS Springfield and USS* Astoria. They will proceed to Seattle, Wash., for a libertv and recreation period _ a.u_ wpi —... a a. ^ wAfifa over tne rourtn ox Jtuy* v/«i«r por» to be visited on the eight-week anise will be Long Beach, Peart Harbor and San Diego. At the latter port the midshipmen will receive training in the newest methods of amphibious warfare. After a shot period of gun nery exercises they will disembark at San Francisco on August 21. Two aircraft carriers, the Boxer and the Princeton, will cruise another group of 1265 junior students who are training for regular commissions. Leaving San Francisco on June 26, they will also have an eight-week cruise carrying them to Pearl Harbor, San Diego, and other California ports. Their training will be directed toward teaching them the latest de velopments in naval aviation. The third cruise will be for the 320 students who are training for com missions in the Naval Reserve. Plans are for them to leave San Francisco on June 26 fpr a 21-day cruise a board the fight cruiser, the Duluth.
