StCJtoTe" Mcl.endon'B big ten:
neLflng at Clover closed Monday
night with a crowd estimated at be
tween 5,000 and (i.ooo people. The
last sermon was especially for the
negroes and the crowd was largely
made up of them, though many white
people were also present. The tent
would not accommodate all who
came. Mclendon was given a purse
amounting to a little over $1,100
while the expenses amounted to a
little more than $600. During the
meeting quite a good many Gastonia
people were in attendance. Mr. Mc
Iendon and party were in Gastonia a
short while, yesterday morning.

CAMP GASTOX NOTES.
Gazette Bureau,
Camp Gaston. July 3 1.
The non-commissioned officers of
Company B presented to the parents
of their much-loved sergeant, the
late Charles W. Adams, a beautiful
wreath of flowers. The company at
tended the funeral in a body.
The new men at the camp are get
ting along fine in all their drills and
the officers of the company are much
pleased with the progress of the
work.
The only trouble -that has arisen
since camp waa formed was the fight
between oar mascot, which is a big
bull dog, and a large shepherd dog
which was strutting around the camp
without a passport, . One squad of
men was detailed to quell the dis
turbance and same was done without
any casualties.
Miss Vista Lindsay will leave to
morrow to spenfl a few days at Tort,
RED
CROSS
...DEPARTMENT...
The "attendance at the work room
on Friday was small, owing perhaps,
to the intense heat. Juite a num
ber of workers were present Friday
night. The Eight Weelfs Club held
their meeting at the work room and
these interested, enthusiastic young
people were very welcome Indeed.
Those In charge of the room extend a
cordial invitation to any club who
will hold any or all of their meetings
at the work room. Much of good
may be accomplished in a few hours,
and the dressings, etc., which are
made are veritable life preservers to
those tossed by the storms of war.
A box of muslin dressings has been
prepared and is ready for shipment
this week.
Everything in the way of white
cloth is needed at the work room.
The smallest of white scraps canr Pe
utilized. One interested and capable
worker keeps a bag near her sewing
machine in which she places trie
white scraps, ravellings, etc., left
from her sewing. These tiny scraps,
too small for use in the home, are
clipped into shreds at the work roora
and mixed with cotton to stuff Trac
ture pillows. The very tiny girls
who wish to help may do this worn.
Every little girl likes to clip with
scissors.
The ladies of the town are urged
to go through their scrap bags ana
select every fragment of clean white
cloth to be sent to the work room.
If a special Red Cross scrap bag were
hung in a convenient place In every
home and every scrap of clean white
cloth placed rn it and sent regularly
to the work room these left-overs
that are so often burned could be
used to a splendid advantage. And
let us remember that workers are
needed as well as material with
which to work.
On account of the death of Mrs.
E. V. Gilliam's brother, the work
room was closed on Monday, this be
ing Mrs. Gilliam's day tb supervise.
Work was resumed on Tuesday af
ternoon. In our cool, comfortable homes let
us try to visualize the men in the
trenches, to imagine the agony and
weakness of flowing. tortuous
wounds; and let us rejoice that In
Gastonia there is a work room open
to which we may go and do the
"bit" which is pleasant to do, and
exceedingly small in comparison to
those things taat the women of war
ridden Europe are- compelled to do.
