Long, of Greensboro, Chair man, State Committee National De fense, Medical Section, wno is send ing out the call. At the Greensboro meeting. Dr. A. V. Knox, of Raleigh, Special Exam iner Medical Reserve Corps, Chair man of the Wake County Auxiliary Society and v member of the . Wake uounty exemption tioara, win pre side. "The Nation looks to the profes slon, he declares, "because, for sooth, there is nowhere else to look to furnish these men. Brethren, shall we perform this patriotic duty and do it now? To fail to respond to our country's call when we are so urgently needed is to confess our lack of, patriotism. Shall we send out soldier" boys to the blood-soaked fields of France and not go with theru to bind uj) their wounds, to render succor la their hour of distress? Shall we sit by, thinking only ofour own personal comfort and safety while our boys are being sent into the maelstrom of death? Has the signi ficance of that benevolent society now being organized which has for its purpose the bringing back home of the bodies of our American sol diers slain in battle, occurred to you? Brethren, we fear that some of us are 'asleep at the swttch.' " Notifying I tall road Employes. Gaffney Ledger. Mr. George C. Dedmondt, of the Southern .Railway staff, spent Satur day in Gaffney. Mr .Dedmondt was here for the purpose of checking up the names of Southern Railway em ployees drawn under the conscrip tion act for army service. In many instances it is not possible for the boards in the various counties to reach the railroad men by mail and the Southern adopted the plan- of sending a man to every county to as certain the names of the employees drawn, following which the road no tifies the employee of that fact by telegraph. Growing on the People. Charlotte Observer. The public has been given 48 hours of reflection on the significance of the Vatican's plan for advancing matters to a final settlement of tfie war on a basis of world-wide peace, and with reflection the possibilities of the Pope's overture become more mani fest. The opinion is being steadily formed that it is by far a more Im portant document than was at first apparent. It is the first thing that has happened since the war began to cause the mind of the world to halt. even momentarily, in consideration of a possible peace. It is one propos al to which the Allies will at least Lbave to make reply and that may be an important step gained. Summer Complaint. During the 'hot weather of the summer months some member of al most every family is likely to be troubled with an unnatural loose ness of the bowels, and it is of the greatest Importance that this he treated promptly, which can only be done when the medicine is kept ' at hand.
