C. in Boone, was home for the week end, James Hendrix, also of A. S. T. C, and of Raeford Rt. 1, was home for the week end. Mrs. Lamar Webb, of Cedar Bluff, Ala,, arrived last week to visit her mother, Mrs. C. M. Willis. Gladys Monroe, who has been work ing with Mr. C. P. Kinlaw, is now working in the R. E. A. office. Miss Ollle Stephens has gone to work at Fort Bragg after completing a training course at Harrisburg, Pa. Mrs. Lill an Oliver and Miss Em ma Barker, of Shallote, spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. Mariop Gatlin. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Baker and Mrs. J. W. McNeill attended the fun eral this week of Mr. J. R. Baker, of Rock Hill. & a La lend Fry, of Carthage and Ft. Bragg, Annie Ruth Alexander, of Greensboro and Johnnie Stephenson of Southern Pnes and the U. S. Navy, spent the week end with Annie Ruth's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Alexander. Lt. and Mrs. Doug Tolar spent a few hours with Mrs. Tolar's mother, Mrs; Ruth Bridges, on their way from Camp Wheeler, .Ga. to Fort Jackson, S. C, -where he w 11 be stationed. Mrs. J. R. Thomas and Miss Elsie Gschwind, mother and neice of Mrs. F. A. Keith, are now making their home with the Keith's. Miss Gschwind has accepted a position with Dr. A. L. O'Briant. Mrs. Tom Culbreth- spent last week-end in Hamlet vis ting her sons, Fred and Graham, and their families. John Lee Stephens spent a few days last week with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Stephens. He Is sta tioned at Ft. Mason, Morehead City. Miss Aris Shankle was the week end visitor of Mr. and Mrs. "Red" McColl, of Fayetteville. Mr. Daniel Blue, of Chipley, Ga., is visiting his relatives and friends here who are always glad to wel come him home. Mrs. J. V". Curr.e is being missed this week at the Soldier's Center where she is associate hostess. She is quite sick at her home. LITERATTRE DEPARTMENT WOMAN'S tXl'B REPORT The annual business meeting of the Literature department of the Wom an's Club was held on Tuesday after noon, at four o'clock at the home of Mrs. V. R. White, wilh Mrs. H. W. B. Whitley acting as associate hos tesses. The following officers were elect ed to serve the department for the comin year: Mrs. V. R. White, Chair, man; Mrs. Neil A. MacDonald, Jr., vice-chairman; Mrs. Harry K. Hol land, secretary and treasurer; Mrs. A. L. O'Briant was continued In of fice as press reporter for the second year. The club discontinued its policy of purchasing books for club reading, and voted to use this money to equip a cabinet, at one of the flirst aid stations, with emergency sup. plies to be used In time of disaster. Plans were made to again sponsor the reading contest for Seniors in the High school, and a comm ttee was appointed to confer with the senior English teacher, make the necessary arrangements, and purchase the prizes to be offered. The regular monthly offering for the Soldiers' Center was taken up and $2.55 realized. Due to the fact that was a business meeting, no program was presented during the afternoon, but after ad journment, a delightful social hour was enjoyed, during which the hos tesses served sandwiches, cookies and coffee. Dr. Alvis Dickson is spending this wtek with his mother. Mrs. Paul Dickson. He graduated Monday, Febiuary 22, from George Wash ington I'n versity, at which time he' received his M. D. He will enter the Navy. Lieutenant (jg) at once. He has been assigned to the Naval Hospital, Pensacola, Fla. Major Ralph Hewitt, who has been stationed at Columbia, S. C, for sev eral weeks, is spending this week at Fort Bragg and Raeford. Monday, Major Hewitt accompanied by Mrs. Hewitt and son, Johnny, will return to Columbia where they will take residence. The Hewitts have occu pied one of the Giles apaitments for sometime and will be greatly missed by their many friends. Mrs. D. M. Colwell, of Akron, O., who has been visiting her daughter and son-in-law, Captain and Mrs. John Godfrey in their home on Fort Bragg, is spending a few days with her "Raeford" daughter and son-in-law, Lt. and Mrs. Tom Evans. Lt. and Mrs. Carl H. Strouse and baby daughter, of Jersey Shore, Pa., are living in the Wm. Lamont apart' ment. Lt. Strouse is in the 2nd Reg- iment of the F. A. R. C. Captain and Mrs. Jackson gave up their apartment at McDuffie's last week as Capt. Jackson was transfer red to Fort Knox. "Reports to the ration board indicate that farmers who raise and can their own fruits and vegetables and meats are un der the impression that they will not need to register for the point ration book. On the contrary, Uncle Sam WANTS every man, woman, and child in the United States to have a ration book, since the rationing program may include not only its present phases, ' but other possible developments in the future.
