PAGE FIVE r ; rj Social Items - Personals L- 1 1 MISS SARAH SMITH WED TO CPU KNAPP (Special to News-Journal) Camp Crowder, Mo., Sept. 29Miss Sarah Evelyn Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David A. Smith, Raeford, N. C, and Cpl. George H. Knapp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Knapp, 844 Bridge Road, Charleston, W. Va., were married Monday evening in a Camp Crowder Chapel by Chaplin Frederick Nichols. Cpl. Knapp is a member of Instruc tor Co. No. 1, 800th Signal Training Regiment. Witnesses were Mrs. Frederick Nichols and T5 Jacob C. Kuipers. The couple is residing at 2210 Penn sylvania St., Joplin, Mo., a nearby town. O . METHODIST CIRCLES The circles of the Society of Chris tian Service will meet Monday after noon, October 4, at 4 o'clock at the Methodist Church. o BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Culbreth of Hamlet announce the birth of a daughter, Constance Liles, at the Hamlet hospital, September 20th. The young lady is the grandaughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Culbreth of Raeford. MRS. POOVEY HOSTESS TO BRIDGE CLl'B Mrs. M. T. Poovey entertained her bridge club and several guests at a luncheon Thursday. Three tables were in play. After several interesting progressions Mrs. Marshall Thomas was found to be high scorer for club members. Mrs. Marcus Smith won the visitors prize and Mrs. K. A. McDonald won at bridge. O BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Fred P. Johnson an nounce the birth of a son, Fred Plum mer, Jr. on Thursday, Sept. 16. Mrs. Johnson is the former, Miss Gladys McKenzie of Raeford. O JAMES HOWELL GOES TO SEATTLE James Howell, who for several months has been working at McDon ald's Esso Station, left this week for Seattle Washington where he has ac cepted a position. Before coming back to Raeford James had worked in Bermuda. He is the oldest son of Mrs. Percy Howell. Pete Howell, who is in the Navy and stationed at Char leston, visited his mother Sunday. O MRS. SHANKLE ENTERTAINS LITERATURE DEPARTMENT All departments of the Raeford's Woman's club which will function re gularly, have now had their opening meetings for the year. The Literature Department had its opening meeting Tuesday evening at the home of Mrs. I. H. Shankle with Mrs. V. R. White and Miss Aris Shan kle associate hostess??.. Mrs. V. R. White, the new chair man, presided and welcomed two new members. Miss Lucy G. Gill and Miss Blanche Fisher into the club. Mrs. J. H. Hampton was elected secretary to succeed Mrs. Julian Blue, who is now with Major Blue in Tex as. Mrs. John C. McLean reviewed the programs planned for the coming year and Mrs. A. L. O'Briant gave a list of new books purchased for the club. Mrs. Shankle reported that the club had given a cake to the Soldiers Cen ter every week during the summer. A collection was then taken for the Soldiers Center. Mrs. J. C. McLean gave a review of a popular current book "Citizen Tom Paine". After the program a social hour with refreshments was enjoyed. Mrs. Harriett McNeill and Miss Sa die McDuffie spent the past week end with relatives in Laurinburg. Misses Gloria Johnson and Tinky Johnson, of Charleston, S. C, spent several days here last week as the guests of their grandmother and aunt. Mrs. Mary Turner and Mrs. Jim Bradley. Mrs. Lois McPhail Dewar, who was married to Lt. Melvin Arthur Dewar on September 12th at Charleston, S. C, has left Fort Bragg for Fredericks burg, Va., to be with her husband. He is stationed at Camp A. P. Hill. Mrs. Dewar was formerly with the Army Dental Corps at Bragg. Mrs. Woodard Hatch and two chil dren of Four Oaks were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Bethune. Mrs. Hatch is the former Miss Hazel Williams who made her home with the Bethunes for several years. Mr. and Mrs. Graham McDonald and two children of Norfolk, Va., were the guests of his brother, K. A. Mc Donald, and family from Monday through yesterday. Mrs. Lawrence Campbell, Jr., and daughter, Martha, are visiting Mrs. Campbells parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. D. McKinnon, in Laurinburg. Mrs. Walter Baker and daughters, Faye and Phyllis spent Sunday in Pine Level with Mrs. Baker's parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Oliver. It was Mr. Oliver's seventy-sixth birthday. The McDaniel family has moved into Mrs. Polly Bethune's house on Donaldson Ave. Mr. McDaniel suc ceeded Mr. Phillips on the Farm Se curity Board. Mrs. A. P. Dickson who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. William Elliott is spending this week with Mrs. H. L. Gatlin, Jr. Rev. A. P. Dickson of Greensboro will come to Raeford tomorrow to take his mother back to High Point. Mrs. Jessie Gibson and Miss Clara Mae Gibson visited Mr. and Mrs. T. D. Crews in Greensboro Spnday. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Upchurch and Mr. and Mrs. Julian McLeod were vis itors in Raleigh last Friday. Mrs. J. C. Thomas and Iris have re turned from a visit to relatives in Durham. Mrs. J. W. McLauchlin has been quite sick during the past week. Katherine Anne Walker has return ed to college in Fredericksburg, Va. Misses Bettie Jo Wood and Gladys Baucom left last week for Greenville, N. C. where they entered Eastern Carolina Teacher's College. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hampton and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hampton of Washington, D. C. spent the week end with Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Hampton. Kenneth is a radio man with the Air Corps, and Robert is in the Navy and has been stationed at Bainbridge, Md. Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Coates, Miss Jo sephine Hall, Miss Louise Blue and Miss barah Elle Conoly spent the week end at Mytrle Beach. With the Army People Mrs. Jack Clift and Mrs. E. A. Hen son were hostesses to the Officer's Wive's last Thursday at the Robert Gatlin home. They served lunch. Bridge, rummy and heart dice furn ished entertainment for the afternoon.. The club was glad to have Lucile Ot to back after a long absence. Lt. and Mrs. J. S. Clendennin have moved into Nell Snead's upstairs apartment. Captain and Mrs. John M. Cook are now occupying Mrs. Julian Johnson's apartment. Capt. and Mrs. Green who have this apartment leased are at Fort Sill for three months. Major and Mrs. Bert Nash have re turned from New York, where Major Nash went on business. Bettie, who is from Salt Lake, Utah, accompanied her husband, while she so "Near" New York. This was her first visit to the Metropolis. Lt. and Mrs. Jack Clift are spending this week in Atlanta, with Lt. Cliffs parents. They also expect to visit relatives in Alabama and are hoping 10 see tason and Betsey Balch. Capt. and Mrs. Puckett, who have had a room at Mrs. C. W. Seate's will move into Mrs. John Walker's apart ment tomorrow. Lt. and Mrs. Douglas Southerland are with Mrs. Otto at the John Mr.. Googan's while Lt. Otto is at Aberdeen Maryland. Mrs. Hoyt S. Bryan who lives in the Leo Fuller house will be hostess next Thursday to the Officers Wive's club. Mrs. Jesse Jordan will be assistant hostess. New member of this club are: Char lotte Williams fCaDt. YICXS MISS MARTHA BRANDON HONORED Miss Martha Brandon, popular bride-elect of October, was honored on Tuesday evening when Miss Pat sy Blue entertained in her honor. Three tables were set for bridge and one for rook in the large living room which was tastefully arranged with Fall flowers. Mrs. Larry Walters, formerly Miss Leon Currie, of the school faculty won the prize in bridge and Mrs. Bill Upchurch won the prize in rook. Miss Blue presented the bride elect with a pair of exquisite crystal vases. A tempting salad course was served ouje3 3q; jajjB Out of town guests enjoying this hospitality were: Mrs. J. R. GILIJS IN HOSPITAL Mrs. Cliff Gillis is a patient in High smith hospital. She suffered a severe attack of appendicitis and underwent an operation last Thursday night. Her condition is reported as satisfac tory.
