C. October 20 W. H. Darst, field crops marketing special ist with the State Department of Ag riculture, has announced that the Commodity Credit Corporation has set a support price of $1.8l per bushel on all soybeans grown in North Caro lina. In explaining that this base price is 20 cents higher than that of 1942, Darst reminded farmers that special price preminums of from two to four cents per bushel will be paid for soybeans which are low in mois ture content 'In view of the fact that from two to four cents more will be paid for dry beans this season, growers should see that their beans are thoroughly dry before they are sold," declared Dnrst. The total soybean crop of 3.900,000 bushels produced in this .State last year brought farmers $6,240,000. Darst estimated that production is up approximately 20 per cent this season. Seeding Winter Cover Crops Seeding winter cover crops to pro vide winter and early spring grazing is being recommended by J. C. Hutch ison, asst. soil conservationist of the Pee Dee-Cape Fear soil conservation district, as a means of getting all-out production from the land. Land handled in this manner actu ally performs a double duty in the war effort. It is in continuous and safe year-round use, producing war crops during the summer and feeding livestock during the off season months for added production of meat snd dai ry products. The conservationist points out that there is a large acreage of land in Hoke County which ordinarily re mains bare and idle until spring, which could be utilized. Both legume and non-legume crops can be planted on this land with good results. Of the non-legumes, oats, rye, rye grass, and barely are perhaps the most cr:nmon. Among the legumes are Austrian winter peas, Harry vetch, crimson clover, and wild winter peas. In addition to providing a winter source of green feed, these crops can he of tremendous value in increasing soil fertility. They protect the soil against erosion during the winter months and improve the soils fertility by restoring nutrients which have been sapped by the preceeding sum mer crops. O Fred The J. E. Cansler herd cf polled Herefords at Lincolnton has been supplied with a surplus of feed, both pasture and winter feed, reports L. I. Case.
