PAGE TnRFF V locia Is-Pe i i. rsonai items DINNER PARTY FOR BRIDE ELECT Miss Barbara Stevens, whose wed ding took place on Friday at high noon, was honored on Wednesday evening with a very lovely dinner party given by IKisses Mollie Cam eron and Mary Lewis at the H. A. Cameron home. The dining room was especially lovely with its flower arrangements and beautifully appointed table. Gladioli and Queen Annes lace in a massive arrangement centered the buffet and an old fashioned bou quet was used on the mantel. Covers were laid for ten at the dining room table. Places were marked with mir ror place cards and an old fashioned nosegay of pastel sweet peas and baby's breath was at every girl's plate except the bride's which was a corsage of all white flowers. All other appointments were white and green, the color motif being carried out in the four courses of the din ner. Flowers in the center of the table were in a rectangular shape and were white glads, snapdragons, roses, gardenias an.1 Queen Annes lace with lighted tapers in crystal candelabra. The hostesses presented Mjss Stevens a piece of china in her pattern. Covers wre laid for the following: Misses Mollie Cameron, Mary Lewis, Barbara Stevens, Nancy Harris of Goldsboro, Catherine Ann Walker, Elsie Upchurch, Agnes Mae Johnon, Irene McCain of Sanatorium, Mrs. Frank Williams and Mrs. June Johnson. TAPP FAMILY HAS PICNIC HONORING LT. ELDRED HELTON The Tapp family enjoyed a bounti ful picnic dinner and much con versation at a get-to-gether Sunday at the Pine Forest Clubhouse hon oring Lt. Eldred Helton who has just returned home from Germany. Lt. Helton was shot down while on a combat mission over Germany and was in a Nazi prison camp for several months. CIRCLE ENJOYS FISH SUPPER The Business Women's Circle No. 9 of the Presbyterian church enjoyed a picnic at the armory last Thursday evening. The regular circle meeting with the Rev. H. K. Holland conduct ing the Bible study was held before the supper. Mrs. F. B. Sexton and Miss Louise Blue supervised the preparation of the supper with chef Dave Jones cooking the fish, corn bread and coffee. It was a most pleasant get-to-gether for the circle. The Rev. and Mrs. Holland, Mrs. H. C. McLauchlin, presijent of the auxiliary, and Mrs. Julian Johnson, counselor, met with the circle. Mrs. Nflda T. Baucom returned home last Thursday from Charlotte but has received word that her mot her is not so well and left again today. Mrs. I. H. Shankle returned to Albemarle last week to be with her twin sister, Mrs. John Casper, who continues desperately ill. Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Sugg and dau ghter, Beth of Leaksville, and Miss Christine MePhaul of Washington, D. C, spent 'the week end with Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Coates. Mrs. Carlton Niven of Roxboro spent. a few days in Raeford visiting Mr. and Mrs. J. .F. Niven. LINEN SHOWER GIVEN MISS BARBARA STEVENS The college crowd was very much interested last week in the wedding of one of their set, Miss Barbara Stevens to Lt. Thomas W. Purcell, Jr., which took place Friday. On Tuesday afternoon Miss Jose phine McLauchlin entertained at the home of her parents in Miss Stevens honor. The highlight of the afternoon was when the hostess presented the honor guest with many beautiful gifts of linen, given by those present. Sand wiches and punch were enjoyed. The occasion was a delightful one, bring ing the young girls together for the first time since their return from college. Tom McGoogan of Georgia was in Raeford Tuesday afternoon calling on John A. McGoogan and other rel atives and friends here. He is visiting relatives in Hoke and Robeson coun ty this month. CIRCLE HOLDS MEMORIAL FOR MRS. TOWNSEND At a meeting of Circle No. 2 of Galatia Church auxiliary in the home of Mrs. Martin Wood at Rockfish, a short memorial service in memory of the late Mrs. Kate Townsend was held. The program for the circle meeting was under the direction of Mrs. Lena Harmon Terrell. 0 MRS. GRANT RESIGNS AAA POSITION Mrs. Alberta Cameron Grant has resigned her position at the county office building. Her husband, L. A. Grant, arrived at Fort Bragg from overseas this week and will get his discharge from the army at once. Mr. and Mrs. Grant's plans are not yet complete. She will be greatly missed as she has been one of the most popular members of the per sonnel administering the AAA program. PARTY BACK FROM BLACK RIVER Mrs. Marshall Thomas and Harold entertained with a house party at their Black River house last week. The party stayed eight days and re ported a grand time. Those enjoying this outing were Mrs. N. B. Blue ani Bonnie Kate Blue, Mrs. Max Hems and Bettie Heins of Sanford, Joan Johnson and Alfred Cole, Jr. Marshall Thomas joined the party Friday. 0 MtBRAYER-TAYLOR Miss Caroline Taylor and Lewis B. McBrayer III were married Sunday afternoon, June 17th in Mooresville, the home of the bride. An account of the wedding will appear in next week's News Journel. Lewis B. is in A. S. T. P. K. Stevens have announced the marriage of their daughter. Mary Barbara, to Lt. Tho mas H. Purcell, A. U. S., now station ed at Dayton, Ohio, son of Mr .and Mrs. T. H. Purcell of Petersburg, Va. The wedding was one of beautiful simplicity and was solemnized at the country home of the brides parents, Friday, June 15, at high noon. The bride's pastor, the Rev. Harry K. Holland of the Presbyterian church, performed the ceremony, using the double ring ceremony. Preceeding the ceremony, Miss Josephine Mc Lauchlin at the piano and Mrs. Fred John Johnson, vocalist of Goldsboro, rendered several musical selections. ' The living room in which the vows were spoken was made lovely with its decorations of white and green. With the mantel as a background, longleaf pine with floor beskets of white gladioli and a low arrangement j oi nowers on the mantel made the alter. The young couple came in to gether. The bride wore a short dress of white, becomingly made and with hat to match. Her bouquet was step- hnotis with streamers of tulle and white satin ribbon. It was centered with a white orchid which the bride wore for traveling. After the ceremony, a perfectly appointed and delicious wedding breakfast was served to the few verv close friends and relatives iwho wit-j nesscd the ceremony. The dining room was in green and white, a sil ver basket in the center holding white snapdragon, roses and gladioli. The casement windows opening onto the screened porch were outlined in ivy and held beskets of white flowers. The couple left for a short trip but returned to Raeford early this week and then left for a short visit to the ; groom's parents in Petersburg be fore going to Dayton where he is connected with the engineering di vision of the Army Air Corps at Wright Field. Mrs. Purcell is a graduate of Hoke High School and has just completed her junior year at Meredith College in Raleigh. Lt. Purcell is a graduate of State College in Raleigh. It was while he was at State that he met his future wife. Out of town people at the wedding were Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Purcell of Petersburg, Va., Captain and Mrs. J.
