McLean were hostesses at the January meeting of the Depart ment of Literature of the Woman’s Cliib at the home of Mrs. McNeill on Tuesday evening. Camellias, jonquils, and other early spring flowers were the decorative note for the occasion. After a business session, with the chairman, Mrs. Marcus Smith, presiding, a program on Twelfth Night was presented. Mrs. N. A. McDonald, Jr. ably discussed the origin and traditions of Twelfth Night, and Mrs. E. H. Robinson told in a most interesting manner of the modern celebration of the holiday. According to ancient custom a queen of the occasion was crowned, and by general con sent Mrs. H. W. B. Whitley was accorded the honor. Mrs. Tommie Upchurch, president of the Wo man’s Club, was a special guest. During the social hour the hos tesses served ice cream, cake and coffee. 9 OPEN HOUSE AT BAKER HOME COUPLES CLUB ENTERTAINED Mr. and Mrs. Neill Senter en tertained the couples club on Thursday evening. All club mem bers were present except Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Gibson, who were out of town. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gatlin were guests of the club, making up the three tables that were in play. Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Lester made the highest combined score, thereby winning the club prize. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gatlin received a gift and Clyde Up church, Jr. won the bingo prize. A dessert course with coffee was served after the game. 0— NEW YEAR’S :VE PARTY MRS. SALLIE McGILVARY HONORED ON BIRTHDAY Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Epstein entertained their many friends on New Year’s Eve at McDonald’s cabin near Timberland. They ser ved a very delicious turkey dinner with all accessories. 0 PRESBYTERIAN CIRCLES TO MEET Thursday night Mr. and Mrs. Riley Jordan and Miss Phyllis Baker were at home to a small group of friends. Guests gathered in the living room and den and were later inivted into the dining room where they served them selves dainty sandwiches, toasted nuts, candies and cookies. Miss Mildred Oliver of Pine Level ser ved punch from the attractively decorated table. Christmas deco rations were used throughout. Out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Parnell of Parkton, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Gardner of Wake Forest, Miss Lou Waddell of Fair B][uff, Miss Catherine Campbell and Coy Lanier of Buies Creek and Mrs. Robert McCleskey of Gainesville, Ga. 0 GARDEN CLUB MEETS Circles of the Raeford Presby terian Church will meet Monday, January 9. as follows: No. 1 with Mrs. W. L. Alexander at 3 o’ clock; No. 2 with Mrs. H. S. Wil lis at 3:30 o’clock; No. 3 with Mrs. Kerr Stevens at 3 o’clock; No. 4 with Mrs. William Lamont, Jr. at 3:30 o’clock; No. 5 with Mrs. J. H. Blue at 3:15 o’clock; No. 6 with Mrs. Robert Gatlin at 3:30 o’clock; and No. 7 with Mrs. A. A. Gra ham at 3 o’clock. 0 —— CHRISTMAS PARTY The Mildouson Home Demon stration Club gave a Tea on De cember 23rd honoring Mrs. Sal- lie McGilvary on her 888th birth day. The club house was beautiful ly decorated with Christmas greens and red light. Soft music was played during the afternoon. The table was covered with a linen cloth and held the beauti ful two tiered birthday cake de corated with 88 white candles, red berries and holly. ^ The guests were met and intro duced to receiving line by Mrs. Jesse Gibson. Those receiving were her daughter, Mrs. L. A. Mclnnis and Mrs. N. A. Mclnnis of Dimdarrach and Mrs. Rod Cameron of Jonesboro Heights, Sanford, N. C. Punch, cookies, nuts and mints were served by Mesdames B. F. McGregor, Bob McBryde, John Glisson, J. T. Dean and M. D. Yates. Mrs. W. J. McBryde pre sided at the gift table and good byes were said to Mrs. Jesse Gib son. Friends came from Red Springs Mrs. Fred P. Giles, who was the manager of Morgan’s Jewel ry Store, and her husband are giving up their apartmeent at the home .of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thom as and leaving Raefotd. The jew elry store has closed. Mrs. Chester Wade and child ren spent several days last week in Oxford with relatives. John McRiaul of Norfolk, Va. and Ernest McPhaul of Parkton were here Sunday to attend the funeral of their cousin, John H. Currie. Junlous Culbreth of putler spent the holidays in Raeford with his brothers. , , Mr. and Mrs. Paul Dezeme left Tuesday night for Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. They wiR return to Rae ford with Mr. and Mrs. J.. B. Thomas. Mrs. W. B. Crumpton returned to Belmont, and Mrs. Guy Taylor and daughter, Mabel Gatlin, re turned to Kinston Sunday after svending the holidays with Mrs. B. R. Gatlin. Mr. and Mrs. Riley Jordan re turned to Winston-Salem Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Warner re turned last week after spending Christmas’ in Easley, S. C. with Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Riddle and children. They were accompanied home by the Riddles for sevend days. Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Caulk and two children, Tommy and Candy, returned to their home near Fall’s Church, Va., Tuesday. Tommy Jr. was quite sick the first of the week. Mrs. Jane HeUiard of Charlotte, who was a visitor in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Lytch during the holidays, fell last Thursday and broke her hip. She was taken to the Charlotte Me morial hospital by ambulance. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Christopher and children left Friday morning for Florida. They will return next summer for the crcp dusting sea son. Mrs. L. B. Brandon returned Monday ni^t after a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Durham in Norfolk, Va. Mrs. Berder Niven left Tuesday to spend several days with rela tives in Langley Field and Ports mouth, Va. Mrs. A. B. Manry and son, Johnny Brinkley, left Tuesday for their home in Norfolk after spending several days with Mrs. Manry’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. McDuffie. Gloria and Millie Brinkley spent the holidays in New York. Mrs. Will McFadyen had as her guests for the New Year week end her three sisters, Mrs. R. L. Rogers of Bradenton. Florida, and Misses Jean and Janie Blue of Raleigh. Mr. and Mrs. H. V. Stuart and children of Charlotte were week end visitors in the home of W. A. McLean. Friends of J. C. McLean, who has been confined to his bed for the past eight weeks, will be glad to know that he is able to be up •a little while each day. Miss Christine McPhaul df Washington, D. C. was a guest in the home of her sister, Mrs. W. J. Coates, last week. Little Alice Hunter and P th Suggs of Leaks- ville^were also gnests of their aimt for the week. Raeford THEATRE Open At 5 P. M. Daify Mrs., Sarah McEachem McNeill is back at home after having spent the holidays in Raleigh with Mr. and Mrs. Laurie McEachem and Mr. and Mrs. Cy Tompson. Miss Katie Blue of Parkton visited her sister, Mrs. J. R. Hamp ton, the first of the week. Mrs. Juanita Cameron Hewitt of Martinsville, Va. and Miss Lura Cameron of Wilson spent Christmas holidays with Mrs. J. St. Pauls, Lumber Bridge, Rae- | a. Cameron, ford, Jonesboro and Antioch. The The Garden club met Tuesday aftertioon at the High School Mrs. W. T. Covington, chairman, presided. Mrs. J. S. Johnson was leader of the program. Two mov ing pictures, “A Million Azaleas” and “How Does Your Garden Grow,” were shown by W. C. Phillips. The pictures were in colors and were very beautiful as well as helpful in planning and caring far a garden. The hostesses, Mrs. Lacy Mc Fadyen, Mrs. Aganora Andrews and Mrs. J. A. Baucom, served delicious refreshments during the social hour. One of the prettiest parties of the gay holiday season was that given by Mrs. Marshall Thomas last Thursday evening when she entertained with dinner followed by bridge. An atmosphere of Christmas hospitality was in evidence from the lighted tree in the yard throughout the house with its cheerful open fire and pretty mantel and table arrangements. Covers were laid at seven tab les for twenty-eight. Each table was centered with a lighted red candle in an epergnette with hol ly berries and hemlock. Place cards and tallies were Christmas bells. A delicious dinner was ser ved. In the game of bridge that fol lowed Mrs. Crawford Thomas made highest score and Mrs. Paul Dickson, Sr. next high. Both were given prizes. 0- LONG-ENGLISH honoree received many nice gifts. 0 BIRTH ANNOUNCEMENT Mr. and Mrs. Chalmers Parks of Route 1, Aberdeen, announce the birth of a daughter, Sunday, December 25, at Moore County hospital. 0 Mrs. J. P. Smith spent the week end in Sanford in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Herman King. Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Black of New Britain, Conn, have rent ed Mrs. Julian Johnson’s apart ment and have moved in. Cameron and Donald took Marie Cameron and Marian Lewis back to Salem Wednesday Mrs. Cameron and Donald spent the night with Mrs. Alan McGee and will return to Raeford today. Charles Avera of Winston-Salem was a guest in the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Lewis Sunday. Mrs. M. A. Ray and Miss Char lotte Ray visited in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Ray in Lex ington during the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Cameron spent the week end in Greenville, S. C. with relatives. Miss Peggy Bethune returned Tuesday night after visiting fri ends in Washington, D. C. since Friday. Mrs. Neill A. McDonald and son spent Friday night and Sat urday in Goldsboro with Mrs. McDonald’s mother. Mrs. Colon Scarborough and daughters, Lillian and Linda, at tended a birthday party given for Mrs. Aulay McAulay in Mt. Gi lead during the holidays. Mrs. Pressley Robinson Rankin enter tained at tea in honor of her mo ther, who was 80 years old on that day. Mrs. A. G. Swanson and two children have returned to their home in Eatonville, Washington, after spending the month of De cember here with Mrs. Swanson’s mother, Mrs. I. H. Shankle. Mr. and Mrs. Neill McFadyen and children spent several days last week in Winston-Salem with Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm McLean. They returned to Raeford Thurs day night. Shankle is spending a few days in Fayetteville with her daughter, Mrs. J. D. McCall. Friends of Miss Mary Mclnnis of Red Springs are distressed to know that the home of Miss Mc lnnis and her mother burned down Sunday night. Miss Mclnnis, who was formerly science teacher in the local high school is now teaching in High Point and had left Sunday to resume her work.
