i WEEK BEIRO OBSERVED “The Home—^Basis of a Better World” is the theme for National Home Demonstration Week in North Carolina, April 30-May 6. Quring this special week atten tion is being focused on what 63,242 home demonstration club women in the State are doing to improve their homes and keep their 'families well. At the same time, home demonstration mem bers are broadening their hori zons and developing a better un derstanding of national and in ternational affairs in every state, Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto RirO. In the 2,050 communities in North Carolina where home dem onstration clubs are orgffliized. Women are celebrating the week with county-wide rrieetings, tours to improved homes, demonstra tions, exhibits, newspaper arti cles, and radio broadcasts. Accord ing to Mi^ Verna Stanton, as sistant State home agent for the State College Extension Service, community “Home Demonstration Days” are being held to recognize the 32,264. leaders for their con tribution to the development of better homes and community life. Other activities are pointing up achievements as rural women hold open house across the State. From a small beginning-in 1911, this program in North Caro lina has grown to an organization covering all of the 100 counties. This broad program features good home management, nutrition, food production and preservation, home furnishings and color ar rangements, family relations^ clothing for the family, citizen ship, music appreciation, good reading, community activities, and many other interests of rural families. “Better informed, healthier and happier rural people are import ant- assets to our democracy,” says Miss Stanton. “Rural people will continue to work toward these vital objectives as they improve their homes and community life, which form the basis of a better world.” THE HOME-BASIS OF A BETTER WORLD Home Demonstration Club members throughout North Carolina are called upon to observe the Fifth National Home Demonstration Week, April 30-May 6. The National Council at its annual meeting in Colorado Springs, Colo. Oct. 3-6 unanimously endorsed the observance of National Home Demonstration Week. The Council em phasized the need for a year round information program to tell ..the story of home demonstration work and to inform the public on the results of such programs as housing, health, safety in. the home, nutrition, better understanding of pub lic problems and poUcies and international relations. In North Carolina more than 63,000 club members will help to bring about a wider understanding of home demonstration club work and they have set up the following objectives: 1. Make the public aware of the place of home demonstra tion work in the entire Extension program. 2. Encourage more young homemakers to actively parti cipate in home demonstration club work. 3. Recognize leaders fo rtheir contribution to the improve ment of home and community life. 4. Reach more people through: a. Increased membership in clubs b. New clubs c. Programs in co-operation with other agencies and organizations. 0 A COUNTRY WOMAN’S PRAYER by Mrs. May Kayser, pier and make better citizens..As club members we get many cook ie and candy recipes; also the latest tips on entertaining. 4. We are invited to attend cooking schools, classes . on arts and crafts, slip cover making, etc. taught by ej^erts from State Col lege. 5. We sing and read. When we open our meeting with the song, “For food and health and happy days accept our gratitude and praise. In serving others. Lord, may we repay our debt and love to Thee”—I always have a feel ing of gratitude that I am a member of this wonderful group. Books may be selected at the close of each meeting to be read by next meeting. We are rewarded with certificates for reading. 6. As a club we make tours, by special bus, that would be too expensive to make alone. This is another reason I am a club mem ber. 7. We are taught to sew, knit, crochet; also to select materials that are best suited for making wearing apparel, as well as for drapes, curtains and bedspreads. This is certainly a good reason to be a member of the Home Dem onstration Club. 8. We may receive free expert advice on landscaping — which lawn grass is best for your loca tion, as well as names of suitable shrubbery, flowers and fruit trees. This is another good reason to be a club member. 9. We attend District Meetings in other counties and hear re ports of work being done. We meet so many nice people and make lots of ftiends that we would never know if we were not club members. .10. When ^ou work in yoiur garden and see beetles destroying your beans, the squash wilted and Irish,^^potatoes covered with bugs, it gives you a great feeling to know you can depend on the Home Demonstration Agent to tell you what you can do to control these pests. 11. We have lessons on using a pressure cooker for canning meats, vegetables; also how to can by other methods.. Classes are taught on preparing frozen foods. This, to me, is a wonderful reason to be a member of the Home Dem onstration Club. 12. Farm and Home Week in Raleigh and Annual Achievement Day in Hoke County is another reason. As I listen to the club re ports I feel proud to be going forward with this group of women, and I realize that we are learn ing to put into action oiir better impluses — straightforward and unafraid. Mrs. Henry McLaurin of Laur- ihburg made the response. Club presidents flom Hoke, Scotland, Robeson and CumberlJmd court- ties gave their yearly reports of work accomplished. We were all proud of the Hoke County report and the fact that eighty-eight women from Hoke County attended the meeting; and received the gavel given for the club traveling the most riiiles to the place of the meeting. Mr. Robert Smith, Dean of Music at Flora Macdonald college, was speaker of the day. His sub ject was “Music Appreciation”, and if everyone could play as Dean Smith can, I’m sure all would appreciate music. His di recting of the songs as well as his talk was a real treat. At the close of the rneeting a picnic lunch was served in the Armory Recreation Room. —Mrs. Tom Sinclair. Gracious Father, give, us hearts grateful for America and the American way if life: Por freedom of opportunity which it brings and the privilege of service to others and to Thee. May we find joy in labor and love beauty in homes made gla4 with song! ♦ May we gain the added skills which knowledge brings, and use wisely the leisure which is their reward. In songs of birds, in thriving gardens, in the laughter of little children, in all “common things of life” help us to find Thine ever-present love. • Keep us from selfish intolerance, from injustice and blind greed: May we learn to live wisely and well on the land which is ours, leaving it ever richer and more beautiful for having been our home. My first reason is that I want my community to be one of the best, if not the test in our county. The Home Deronstration Club teaches us so many things we can do to help make it just that. We are asked to serve on rommittees in county drives for March of Dimes, Red Cross, Can cer, Overseas Relief, and others; in this way we let outsiders know we are ready and willing to do our part.. Thus living one part of our club collect—“Let us take time for all things.” 2. I like to know my neighbors ev/.i if we do live several miles apart. At club meetings we be come better acquainted as we laugh an dtalk while learning to make a “Candlewick” bedspread, Hooked rug, Drapes, Shuck mats, or to bake a prize winning cake or pie. I never could make crisp pie crusts until I became a Home Demonstration Club member. ■ 3. I believe a happy home is a great force in molding character.
