The soil should then be smoothed with a tandem or horse drawm disk followed by a drag narrow. As soon as possible after the seed has been settled by a rain the-, fertilizer should be applied and; soil freshened with a drag harrow and sbeded. Use 2-12-12 fertilizer at the, ..rate of 1000 lbs. per vacre. This can best be applied with a grain drill which will give evep distribution and place the fertilizer in the ground instead of on top. . ’■ Seeding should be done uniform ly ^nd covered lightly - not over ’2 fcch. The best method of sear ing {is with seeding attachment on a ciiltipacker. This sows and covers the seed in one operation. A Cyclone hand seeder can be usetj or a grain drill with the pressure spring released. Cross seeching is advisable when using any) method other than the culti- pacler. After seeding it is im- portent that the soil be firmed witn some type of roller to aid geripination and protect the ino culii^. Two lbs. of ladino clover and 12 fcs. of Fescue is ample seed per'Jicre if a shallow, firm and well) pulveri*ei'i seed bed is pre pared. It^is absolutely necessary that the clover seed be inoculated and #. it itf advisable to use twice the I* amount recommended on the con tainer. This inoculation is good until a date which is stamped on the container. Be sure that date has not passed and that the ino culum used is for Ladino-Clover This also will be printed on the container. ^ The best method of inoculation is to place the seed in an open container such as a tub or pan. Add a small amount of sugar or syrup to a bucket of water. Pour enough of this water on the seed to moisten them. Stir seed to be sure each seed is moistened. Then add the inoculum and mix thoroughly so that each seed is coated with it. If needed add enough cottonseed meal or dry soil to -dry the seeds and make sowing easier. Sunshine kills inoculum so this preparation of seed should be done in the shade and the seed immediately sowed and covered. The use of sugar or syrup in the water is important because its stickiness holds the inoculum to the seed and also it provides food, for the bacteria until the seed germinates. It is best to sow the seed on a cloudy day. If this is not possi ble then they should be sown late in the afternoon. 0— PERSONALS John McLauchlin had the mis fortune to break his arm during the Raeford-Hanilet football game last Friday evening.
