THE NEWS>J0URNAL THURSDAY, MAY 1, 1W2 . ■'S'l i'' W HOME DEMONSTRATION CLUB WEEK itsim int 27-iin 3 Heads HD Program Hdce County Cfaib Women Take Part h Many Cmnmanity Achieyements During the past year the Home Agoit devoted 215.5 days to work with adults and 76.5 days to work with girls organized in five 4-H Clubs. 122.5 days were spent in the office and 169.5 days in the field. 513 home visits were made into 463 different homes. 897 office calls were received and 392 telephone calls answered. 59 news articles were written and published and 9352 bulletins dis tributed. One radio broadcast was WTitten ,and broadcast. Seventeen training meetings were held for local leaders with 224 women at tending. Forty-seven method dem onstrations were given 673 women. Forty method demonstrations were given before 878 4-H Club members. One result demonstra tion was held with 60 people at tending. One tour for adults was made w’ith 19 people in attendance. Four tours were held for 4-H club members with 72 in attend ance. One Achievement Day w^ held with 77 women attending. One encampment was held with 43 people attending. The Home Agent' has attended and partici pated in 142 other meetings of an Extension nature with 3800 adults present. Seven such meetings were held for 4-H club members, with a total attendance of 155. Trained leaders held 62 meetings where 1124 people attended. One 4-H club meeting was held by a local leader. Twenty-two 4-H club members attended this meeting. Hoke County club women have taken part in many community and. club activities. Seventeen reading certificates were present ed on Achievement Day.. Two layettes were sent to the Red Cross. Six club members repre sented the county at Farm and Home Week in Raleigh. The Pine Forest Club added $50.00 to their club treasury by serving a lunch eon to members of the Chamber of Commerce. A Hoke County Home Demonstration Chorus was organized in March with 39 mem bers joining the group. Three club members attended a meeting at Chapel Hill on “Briefing of World Affairs.” Hoke County Club mem bers prepared and served the an nual Farm Bureau dinner and added $^00.00 to their County Council treasury. They have put on a drive to get rural people to improve their mail boxes. The County was hostess to the annual District Meeting recently. National Council meetings and plans to attend her third when the meeting comes to Raleigh in Oc tober. ' The theme for this particular week is “Today’s Home Builds Tomorrow’s World.” It was adopt- ecf for the first special observance in 1946 and since it met with na tional approval, it has come to be accepted as the theme for all home demonstration work. The whole purpose of setting aside the week April 27 - May 3 is to tell more people aboutidem- onstration work. Home demon stration work is that part of the Extension Service that deals with the home. And Extension work is a cooperative project of the United State Department of Agriculture, State Colleges of Agriculture, county and local governments and local governments and local or ganizations. Let’s look at the picture in North Carolina. There are 100 counties in the state and each one employs one or more home" dem onstration agents. In fact, there are 178 white home demonstra tion agents and assistants work ing in the 100 counties and 54 negro home demonstration agents ^d assistants working in 50 coun ties. Home demonstration work is a voluntary adult education pro gram. It is carried into the homes and communities by home dem onstration agents assisted by wo men who serve by voluntary local leaders. It concerns everyone because a good home is for every body who lives in it. It is funda mental. It means good nourishing food on the table, health, safety, a better dressed family, more at tractive homes for comfort and D. C. and other points of interest with the High School students and teachers the past week end. The Arabia Home Demonstra tion Club members met, in the home, of Mrs. Lee Adcox last Friday. “Ironing a Shirt, Made Easy,” was the demonstrated by the leaders, Mrs. Cornelia Russell and Mrs. Ella Traywick. The Mildouson PTA will feed the Ruritan members again td- night. The proceeds will go on the lunch room program. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Morman spent the week end with lOlr. and Mrs. Latta Cook and children of near Raleigh. Oral Roberts Meeting in Fayette ville Sunday. Johnnie McKenzie had a week end leave spent with homefolks. The Gov ernor’s statement was released in conneption with National ^om^ Demonstration Week, April 27- May 3. in building understanding, and friendship has gone into many countries through the Letter Friend and Exchange programs. Their contacts at National and In ternational meetings with rural women from many countries has been a means of building a strong er program. Then there is the community side of home demonstration work. The club women’s interest have advanced far beyond the four walls of the home. . They have taken the logical step from bet ter homes to better communities. They sponsor in cooperation with other organizations, health clinics, hot lunches in schools, better re creation, improved church and community beautification pro grams, such as the model mile. Home demonstration club wo men are learning how to be better citizens'. They are attending Citi zenship Training Schools, discuss ing the problems of good govern ment and studying their responsi bilities as informed and active citizens.
