It happened back in that plea sant place we call yesterday on a beautifully wintry m uning in Miss Emma's little school. There were eight little girls and six little boys. We were standing there that cold morning beside the old box heater, warming our hands. I have forgotten now what Mildred and Margaret said to each other, and I have forgo'.tcn who said it it first. Anyway, one little girl took her ruler and threw it at the other, and the other one turned around and kicked her. About that time Miss Emma arrived on the scene. She taught reading and writing and arith metic. She also taught us about living in harmony with one an other, as Jesus would have us do. Miss Emma made Mildred and Margaret go to the blackboard and write on it one hundred times, "Love one another." Today, almost fifty years later, the two grown-up little girls are still the best of friends and they love each other. Atiservtf ummiuun-HMMiinui SOU BT VIM". Williford County Farm Agent Hoke County is generally known as a cotton producing county. In previous years, we have been growing approximately 25,000 acres of cotton and about 4,000 acres of tobacco. The gross in come from the 4,000 acres of to bacco has averaged from two to four hundred thousand dollars per year more than the gross in come from the 25,000 acres of cotton. Actual farm records, when kept accurately and completely, show that it cost approximately 'i bale of cotton to produce an acre of cotton. So from these fi gures, we would be led to believe and rK'ht'y so, that when you i produce 'j bale to the acre you are just fnrmir'j for the benefit of t:,c peonlo who st'.l you the c .n pp U'.rtinii supplies such .. ins'-".!:''. trnc'or:, sprayers, t It i:- nocs.-:try to m;ikc more b.ile tn the acre to show a piol'it. The people supplying cotton seed for Iloke County are very important in increasing cotton production per acre and will co opcra4e with ynu to the fullest ox'ent in getting you the best seed available. The recommended variety is the same as it has been for several years Coker 100 Wilt. There are several strains of Co ker 100 Wilt, but your seed deal ers will have the best strains a vailable. These seeds should be not over three years from the breeder and preferably not over Mrs fM jctt ii NATCHEl Hi!' m we a rk too ll , j4 I NITKATE CVSOa J I I """' "' 41 two. The reason for this is that this particular strain of cotton was developed by several years of careful breeding and selection and is, in a sense, a hybrid. The breed er is contiually selecting and breeding for better production on this strain and will not let it run down to lower standards. The hy brid character of this cotton will cause it to have a tendency to go back to the original variety used in breeding. After several years, it will not produce as much high grade cotton per acre as the first and second generation from the breeder. In buying your seed, also be sure that your seed has been de linted and treated with one of the recommended chemicals. Delinted seed will give a much better dis tribution of the seed in the row, and chemically treated seed will cause more of them to come up and survive the first few days after they sprout. For In stance, last year I saw several cases of people who conducted good dusting programs except for missing one week during the dusting period. If that week hap pened to come during the time that boll weevils were flying from field to field, a population could build up large enough to reduce the yield per acre by a very large per cent. The seven or eight dust ings that were properly applied could have no effect on curing the squares that were punctured because of one dusting that was missed at a vital time. W. G. Several of you have inquired about the control of wireworms in newly set tobacco plants. Wireworms have usually done considerable damage before they are detected in the field. The time to control wireworms is at the time of setting the plants or before. Three materials are good for use in transplanting water. They are: Heptachlor or Aldrin, four ounces (about one cup) 23 per cent wettable powder to a 50 gal lon tank of water or Lindane, one fourth ounce (about one table spoonful) 25 percent wettable powder or two ounces of 9 per cent transplanting solution to 50 gallons of water., These doses are based on the assumption that you use about 200 gallons of water per acre. 111!!!! This method works better if soil is in good condition. From the best Information that I can get, the blllbug was a ma jor pest in corn last year. There is no control measUre that works too well if you plant corn behind corn. The best plan is to rotate and not plant corn behind corn or any nearer where corn was planted last year than necessary and dust with 5 percent DDT when byibug damage begins to appear, especially at the borders of the field. Use enough DDT to insure good coverage of the young plants. The bulletins featured this week are: "Nematode Control in Flue- UOCKFISH TABERNACLE BAPTIST Rev. Scott Turner, Jr., Pastor 9:45 A. M.
