New Alfalfa
Offers Weevil
Resistance
Scientists with North
Carolina State University, the
University of Maryland and the
U. S. Department of
Agriculture have developed a
variety of alfalfa with
improved resistance to the
destructive alfalfa weevil.
Dr. R. L. Loworn, director
of agricultural research at
NCSU, said the new variety has
been named "Team" in
recognition of the teamwork
that went into its development.
Team is the result of 10
years of research. It is a
vigorous growing variety with
greater resistance to the alfalfa
weevil, anthracnose,
Stemphylium leafspot,
common leafspot and pea
aphid than commercial
varieties now grown in North
Carolina. It is susceptible to
bacterial wilt. Yields are similar
to Cherokee.
Some certified seed are
expected to be available for
planting in the spring of 1970.
While Team has improved
resistance to tiie alfalfa weevil,
this resistance is not sufficient
to withstand the weevil
without the aid of insecticides.
Dr. Thad Busbice, of the
Department of Soil Science,
did the major breeding work
on Team at NCSU. Dr. William
Campbell of the Department of
Entomology tested Team for
insect resistance.
Alfalfa was once known as
"queen of the forages" in
North Carolina. Severe
infestations of the weevil has
cut acreage from over 100.000
acres in the early 'SOs to 9,000
in 1968.
