LIMIT ONE COUPON CHAMPIONS-Lumberton Knitwear, defending champions in the District Five Softball Tournament, did it again Wednesday night to take this year's championship. Knitwear Takes Title, Bo's Second Bv Pal Scott Lumberton Knitwear won three straight games Wednesday night to capture the District Five Tournament Championship. Knitwear started the night off by defeating Virgil's lb-6 with homers by Haggins and Willoughby. Haggins was five for five for Lumberton while Chandler of Virgil's went three for three. Lumberton kepi their hitting streak against undefeated Bo's Shopworth with a 11-0 win. Bo's had only four hits to Knitwears 14. as Haggins went three for three. In the final game. Knitwear was still going strong with a two run homer by Haggins. Bo's got one run out of four hits while the overpowering Knitwear team took home the trophy with a 5-1 victory. Knitwear also took nine out of 14 all-star positions. That is not a bad percentage. In the tirst round Tuesday night, Western Auto lost a heartbreak 12-10 to Lumberton Knitwear in a well matched game. Haggins was three for three at bat and Willou^iby's'homet aided Knitwear to the quarter-finals. Bartch of Western Auto was three for four in the game. McNeill's was ready for Carolina Turf as they beat them 11-6. Faulk was four for four as he aided McNeill's to a fine defensive victory. Mariel Jacobs was three for four for Carolina Turf but the team wenl scoreless too many innings. Bo's Shopworth defeated Virgil's 5-4 giving them their first loss in tournament competition for the two weeks. Virgil's put forth a great effort as Chandler was three for three, which included a two-run homer, and a was also aided by Pete Maynor's solo homer. Bo's came up with the winning run after an error and a walk in he sixth, and then held Virgil's scoreless in die top of the seventh. Willoughby and Kissan both hit solo homers to aid Knitwear in their defeat of McNeill's 8-0. The win advanced them to the championship games. The Knitwear team was defeated only once in the tournament and that was by Virgil's 9-8 in the first round. Two VirgiPs Players Make All-Star Charles Chandler and Pete Maynor. outstanding players for Virgil's, represented the Raeford teams on the all-star team for the District Five Tournament which was chosen by a special committee composed mainly of Kiwanis members. Tlie team was dominated by members of the tournament champions Lumbcrton Knitwear as Hoke High Joins 4-A Hoke County High School is now placed in a new athletic conference this year which will put them in a new classification for athletic activities. Joining Hoke County in the new Southeastern 4 A Conference will be Sanford, Richmond County, Scotland, Pinecrest, Lumbcrton. and Wadesboro Bowman. "It's die same as the old Southeastern 3-A conference with the exception of Clinton and Dunn who are going to remain the same and compete in the same conference with Burgaw," said Hoke athletic director John Pecora. Pecora said that he looked for Richmond County and Sanford to be the big powers not only c5f the conference, but of the state, and tliat he hoped Hoke would be a contender. Head football coach Bill Cameron said that he is looking forward to the re-alignment. "I'm looking forward to the new conference. If I can get our players to feel like 1 feel about the new conference., well have a good year," said Cameron. Three Study Yearbook Martha Wood, Dwan Upchurch and Deborah McNeil] of Raeford have been awarded certificates on completion of a week long course in yearbook procedures conducted at Furman University,Greenville, South Carolina, and sponsored by the Yearbook Workshop of Greenville. During the week they concentrated on yearbook layout and design, photography, typography, and copy writing. The workshop was the tenth annual session, and the fifth to be held at Furman University. they took nine out of the 14 slots open. John Miller, Glenn MBer, Henry Hostetler, and Larry Be alley posted first round wins in die men's singles as Roy Wood lost to Johnny Miller 6-1, 6-1; Glenn Miller defeated Duncan Buoyer 6-1, 6-1; Henry Hostetler downed Robert Calhoun 6-1, 6-2; and Danny Lee fell to Larry Beasley 64, 6-2. In the women's action, Kathy Leach beat Diana Nadi 64, 64. The championship round for the tournament is scheduled for Thursday night.
