Canning Crisis Crunch
The latest crisis, the great canning lid shortage of 1975, runs rampant here as
well as everywhere else, as a random sampling of opinion on Main Street ranged
?from mild concern to utter disgust:
Kaye KeDey, "It just so happens we
ran into some thank goodness. If we
hadn't, we would have been in
trouble. I hear they want to sell the
jars with the lids. / haven't found any
in Raeford."
Sandra Holcomb, "I really don't
think there is a shortage, / think the
stores got them. People are buying a
whole bunch at a time everytime
they see them in the stores. I've
looked for them, and I had to go to
Fayettevillc."

Hazel Niven, "We Ve heard a lot of
complaints because people are losing
their gardens. I don't know what the
answer is. People are having to buy
the jars just to get them. "
Mr. Mary Cook, "I might need
some. I have some I had left, but IV
need some more shortly. I sure don 7
know where I'll get them, I just
heard my daughter talking and she
couldn 7 find any. "
Peggy Thompson, (not pictured) "If
they can make the jars, they can
make the lids. They 're just trying to
make more money. / heard on the
news where people were hoarding
them. I can 7 afford to buy jars
every time / need lids. Last time / got
any was a month and a half ago."
FABRIC FINISH
Water repellent finishes are not the
same as waterproof ones. Water
repellency means the fabric has been
treated in such a way that it is
resistant to wetting. But the fabric
still allows air and body heat to pass
through. Waterproofed fabrics arc
completely sealed so that neither
heat nor air can pass through. This
makes them more uncomfortable to
wear, but they are truly waterproof,
