BOOK WEEK- Book characters really came to life at Scurlock school last week as the fourth grade language arts classes taught by Sammie Wilson dressed in various costumes as part of Children s Book Week. An extensive display of posters, made bv the students, decorated the lunchroom. Area Incidents Stolen Bike Recovered Joe Upchurch complained to deputies that a cow was shot about 9:30 P.M. Nov. 17. According to the complaint, a witness heard shots and saw a vehicle leaving the area with the lights off. The cow was killed by a high powered bullet, according to the rennrt Thomas F. Wright, P.O. Box 70, Raeford, reported that S7.000 in damage was done to a 175c Inter national truck loader, apparently by placing foreign matter in the engine. The discovery was made after the maching was repaired, according to the report. City police recovered a motorcycle Monday near Vass Rd. which was reported stolen last June by a city resident. The 1972 Yamaha valued at S450 was undamaged, officer C..F. Campbell said. It was reported stolen from Timothy A. Young. 207 E. Elwood Ave. About S10-S12 in cash was taken from two vending machines broken into at the Traveler's station on 401 - Bypass sometime Sunday night. An undetermined amout of money was stolen front a snack machine at Hoke High school in a break-in sometime Sunday night. A soft drink machine was also heavily damaged, Campbell said. Entry was apparently made through a window in the Gibson building. Two juveniles, aged 14. were picked up by officers K.B. Griffin and G.P. Brown and charged with a break - in at the First Baptist Church Thursday night. Campbell said the pair, both city residents, apparently pried oft a lock on a basement door to gain entry. Soft drinks were stolen in the incident. Community Calendar Compiled By Raeford-Hoke Chamber of Commerce Tuesday. December 2. 1975. American Legion will meet at 7:30 P.M. The Raeford Friendship Senior Citizens Club will meet at 2:30 P.M. Thursday. December 4. 1975 Kiwanis Annual Pancake Supper will be held at the Gibson School Cafeteria from 5:30 till 8:00 P.M. HOW MANY DAYS? City merchants have been busy decorating stores to remind shoppers that Christmas isn 't far off and the familiar notices about the number of shopping days left are appearing. Major Arts Show In Greensboro A major national arts and crafts show will be held Dec. 6-7 in the Greensboro Coliseum. The second annual Carolina Craftsmen's Christmas Classic will feature the work of approximately one thousand artists and craftsmen from all over the country. They will display, sell, and. in many cases, demonstrate their specialities. Winners in each category will be chosen by their peers. Participants are selected on the basis of quality of their work and manv are award winners from arts and crafts shows throughout the East. Hours for the show will be 10 A.M. - 10 P.M. Saturday and 12-9 P.M. Sunday. Admission is $2 for adults and S.75 for children. On display will be metal sculp ture. woodcarving, ceramics, lapi dary, basketry, glass blowing, needlework, weaving, toy making, blacksmith, leather work, china painting, quilting, acrylics, pho tography. and Japanese fish and crab rubbing. BICENTENNIAL FLAG- Shirley Allen, daughter of Mrs. Johnny Allen of Rock fish, displays the U.S. flag she crocheted during the past year. The six by f>vo and one half foot creation is entered in the arts and crafts competition at the current Coastal Carolina Fair. Miss Allen is a Charleston. S.C.. resident. Use Caution If Driving Twenty persons lost their lives on Tar Heel roads last year over the long Thanksgiving holiday period and state officials remind motorists to be cautious while driving this weekend. The official holiday period be gins at 6 P.M. Wednesday. Nov. 26 and runs to midnight. Sunday Nov. 30. "The Thanksgiving holiday weekend is traditionally one of the most dangerous of the year on North Carolina streets and high ways". Edward L. Powell, commis sioner of motor vehicles said. The N.C. State Motor Club said that approximately 22 persons will lose their lives during the 102-hour period. "We urge motorists to use every precaution at all times." said club president Paul B. Marion, "but especially during holiday weekends when traffic is heavier than usual." Marion pointed out that care lessness at the wheel still plavs a leading role in auto mishaps. "Last Thanksgiving three of the 15 accidents that resulted in fatalities were caused by driving on the wrong side of the road, ' he said. "Therefore, we hope our pre dictions will remind motorists to stay alert." For the year, the motor club said that fatalities are more than a hundred behind the 1974 toll. Bank Joins 'Waltons' Telecast A special two-hour broadcast of "The Waltons" will bring into focus the dimensions of this re markable family when it is pre sented on the CBS television net work Thanksgiving night, Nov. 27, at 8:00 P.M. The holiday telecast of the series is being sponsored by The Bank of Raeford through its membership in the American Bankers Association (ABA). Key Banker Named To coordinate the agricultural activities of the N.C. Bankers Association in this area, Gene Carter has been named County Key Banker for HOKE County. Carter, who will serve during the next twelve months, is president of The Bank of Raeford. Sr. Citizens Meet Dec. 2 The Raeford Senior Citizens Friendship Club will hold a covered dish luncheon at the Raeford United Methodist Church on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at 12:30 P.M. Each member is asked to bring a gift to exchange. Chris C. Watkins, new organist and choir director at the Raeford Presbyterian Church will give a program of Christmas music on the organ. Deputy Quits Deputy C.L. Sewell has resigned from the sheriff's department and a replacement is being sought, Sher iff D.M. Barrington announced. Starting salary for deputies is S7.000. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalency certificate, and be able to pass a physical examination. Sewell joined the department ir. September. Lawman Pick 1976 Board The Hoke County Law Enforcement Officers Association selected their board of governors for 1976 during a Nov. 21 meeting, president J.K. Riley announced. The new board was named as Sam R. Motley, president; Leonard Wiggins, vice-president; Archie Clark, secretary - treasurer; members Ray Davis, Ed Grannis, Clifton Bennett, Joseph E. Dupree, Alec Norton, Jimmy Riley, Robert Younts, and Jim Bullock.
