Three extension homemakers from Hoke County boarded a bus in FayetteviUe, April 25th to go on a tour sponsored by the State Home Economics Extension, N.C. State University. The tour was called "1976 University on Wheels." After our first night stop in Marvland. we went to Philadelphia to take a walking tour of Indepen dence Square where we saw the Liberty Bell. From there, we visited the first solar house at the University of Delaware and at the research center attended a lecture on soybeans. The home economists had prepared a pot of soybeans and asked each to taste. Believe it or not but they tasted good. Leaving Newark, we went to New York. "Hie first thing on our program there was given by several Union Carbide officials, a lecture and demonstration of their out standing development in areas of solid waste disposal, solar energy and etc. The most outstanding to us was the Lende Oxygen Walker System to help emphysema patients. Some of us went to see a broadway play "The Royal Family" at the Helen Hayes Theatre. The next day we visited the Metropolitan Museum, seeing a special collection of arts being shown, "The World of Franklin & Jefferson", a Bicentennial showing. We also saw fashions of yesteryear and attended a lecture by M. Vincent Minetti. Mr. Minetti received part of his education at the University of N.C., Chapel Hill, N.C. Have you ever seen silver being made? We saw this at the Wallace Silver Company at Wallingford, Connecticut. We saw how flatwear was made from the beginning to the finished product, ready to ship. Later the same day, we toured Mark Twain House and Harriet Beecher Stowe House, leaving here for New Haven, Connecticut, tor a walking tour of Yale Art Gallery to see a special collection of art loaned to the University by England. The next day, we went to the Mystic Seaport at Mystic, Connecticut for a walking tour. Here we boarded a Whaling Ship resting in the harbor. This is a 40 acre outdoor maritime museum, a HOMEMAKERS TOUR Three county women are off on the extension homemakers University Days on Wheels Educational Tour, left to rightL, Bertha Hendrix of the Mildouson Club.
