Read Hebrews 11:1-7 ? "Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance. (Psalm 42:5) In the short time that I have been in college, I have already ex perienced a frustrating disappoint ment. I had considered myself to be a good Christian. But during this time 1 began to have second thoughts about faith in God. I couldn't help but wonder why He had let such a thing happen to me. I was confused and never at peace with myself. Then I re-read the story of Jesus. 1 realized that He had many disappointments, but He never lost His faith in the heavenly Father. Even as He hung dying on the cross, He continued to trust God. 1 realized that our disappoint ments are relatively small com pared to what Jesus had to overcome. Yet we throw our hands into the air and say "I quit" whenever things don't go as we would like them to. We should observe Jesus as an example of > never - ending faith and strive to be like Him. When we do, we will find the courage and strength we need to live. PRAYER: Dear Lord, forgive us for the weaknesses in our faith. May we realize that You have a wonderful plan for each of our lives. Help us to strengthen our selves spiritually and always to have faith, just as our Savior, Jesus Christ, did. Amen. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Faith in God brings peace within, -copyright -THE UPPER ROOM --Charles Horace Kimbrough (Sylvania, Georgia) BUIE FIRM (Continued from Page I) massage parlors which had been requested by commissioners earlier this month. Hostetler said the suggested draft is a combination of the Durham, Fayetteville and Cumber land County ordinances. It sets forth strict licensing requirements for masseuses and masseurs, sets fees and prohibits business except between the hours of 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. It also bars massages given by a member of the opposite sex. DeVane urged that a section barring Sunday business be written into the ordinance, and also re commended that the sheriff be furnished with names of all em ployees of any such establishment within 24 hours, rather than seven days. Action on the massage parlor ordinance is expected to be final ized next month. Lewis St., 875-3001 . 8P ccenl- on gricullure BY JOHN SlEDGt N C Fatm Buieau fedeiation Thanks to modern agriculture, our nation is the envy of most of the world for the quantity and quality of its food. And, in addition to feeding our own people, we send abroad the production of one acre out of four to feed less fortunate nations. But in spite of this record of human service, agriculture is sharply criticized by some as a major villain in environmental pollution. There is the implication that if we could somehow return to the "natural" agriculture of old, most of the environment problems would disappear. We in agriculture should not expect to be immune from criticism. We have some faults, and in a number of ways we can, and should, do better than we are doing. However, modern agriculture is already doing more than most to help clean up the environment. For example, long before the current wave of concern, farmers were leaders in promoting the cause of conservation, as witnessed by contour plantings, terraces, grass waterways, and other erosion - control practices. What about cleaner air? People and factories and vehicles are using up our oxygen and creating an ever-increasing amount of carbon dioxide. Modern agriculture helps to clean up this air, by converting carbon dioxide back to oxygen. Each acre of 100 - bushel corn is said to remove 8 tons of carbon dioxide from the air, and replace it with 7 tons of oxygen. What about cleaner streams? Modern agriculture minimizes the number of acres which need to be cultivated. It has been estimated that without fertilizers and chemi cals we would need 50 per cent more acres of cropland. This would mean exposing many millions of additional acres to wind and water erosion. What about improving the quality of our land? For more than 200 years the "old" agriculture was depleting our soils. It is only in the last 30 years that we reached the state where we are putting more into the soil than we are taking out. Modern agriculture is a soil - builder, rather than a soil - miner. What about improving the quality of life itself? Modern agriculture makes it possible for our nation's population to eat, at prices they can afford. A return to the "old" agriculture would sub stantially increase the cost of food. The efficiency of modern agri culture is making a significant contribution to the quality of life, by keeping the cost of food within reach of the maximum number of people. 20 YEAR!* - Tommy Summers completed 20 years of sendee with Burlington Industries on June 17.
