Brooks said. Permits for the first eight months of 1977 totaled S463.961.314 in the 38 cities and were up 25.2 percent over the comparable period in 1976, when the total was S3 70. 721,956. Commissioner Brooks noted. The August building upsurge included large increases in the number of permits issued in all categories of building," Brooks commented. "A total of 631 per mits were issued for construction of new single-family dwellings-up 41 .5 percent from the 440 permits issued in August last year. "In the multi-family residential group. 265 permits were issued, compared with only 104 in August, 1976-an increase of nearly 155 percent. Nonresidential building permits also were up 23 percent, numbering 36V compared with 300 in August last year. Winston-Salem $38. 156.208. oke ighlights *c",r On Friday, November 18 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. the Hoke Music Booster Club will be sponsoring a Turkey Dinner and Bazaar in the Gibson cafeteria at Hoke High. During this time performing groups from Hoke High and Up church will present mini-concerts. The groups performing are the H.H.S. chorus and chorale, the Upchurch band, the Upchurch chorus and the H.H.S. marching band. Tickets for the turkey dinner must be purchased in advance from members of the Music Booster Club. No tickets will be sold at the door. Last Saturday the Hoke High Band competed in Mullins, S.C. The band completed its marching season with a superior rating. Even though this was the last competi tion, the band is still scheduled to march in several local parades. Congratulations band on a job well done. Congratulations are also extend ed to the chorus and chorale. Last * Thursday night (Nov. 10) the vocal groups performed their first con cert of the year. Because of the fine performance, one sees the hours of diligent practice. If you missed the chorus and chorale concert or have not as of yet seen the band. Friday night will be the perfect opportunity to see these fine groups. You might also pick up a few Christmas gifts at the Bazaar. Attend Service In Washington The Rev. Louis McPhatter, pastor of the Hillside Holiness Church, conducted the service at the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Washington. D.C. on Nov. 13. Members of the local congregation accompanied him. The trip was sponsored by the4 Hallelujah Chorus. Accompanying Rev. McPhatter were: Otis McPhatter, Mr. and Mrs. Tom McPhatter. Mrs. Mabel McGregor and grandson, Maggie Anderson, Denise Grimm, Willie de Berry and Phyllis Patterson. The bus driver, Robert A. Billington, helped make it an enjoyable trip for all.
