HAIL DID THIS Friday evening's hail storm damaged 30 of James Nixon s 37 acres of tobacco on his farm in Ashley Heights. Rt. I. Aberdeen, in western Hoke County. Of the 30. six acres were total losses. The damage to the others ranged from heavy to light. Nixon is shown with some of his damaged tobacco. Hail Damages Hoke Tobacco Crops Friday's hail storm damaged 50 to 60 acres of tobacco in Hoke County, Wendell Young, chairman Army (Continued from page 1) ? information he had obtained about the low flights was the helicopter apparently had flown offcourse from the air corridor and over the Scull property, which is only a half mile from the corridor. Van Hoy said the flights occured during a firepower demonstration. The congressman's office was informed that each Army aircraft unit had been sent a letter telling it to keep its craft in the corridor. 0 Van Hoy also said he had met July 29 with Mrs. Scull at her home about the complaints. Van Hoy had checked the air craft units in response to a call from the congressman's office in connection with Mrs. Scull's com plaint. Van Hoy said, however, that because of the numbers of heli copters on the base it was not known which had flown over the aScuII property. ^ The congressman's office asked Mrs. Scull Friday in a telephone call whether the meeting with the Simmons officer had been satis factory to her and advised her that if she had any more trouble "to let us know." Rose was very upset about the complaints. After Mrs. Scull's complaint was relayed to him, his office told the ?Simmons Air Field command the ^.congressman did not want any aircraft flying low over property and Van Hoy checked the situa tion. Around Town (Continued from page I ) know what it is there tor and how you should conduct yourself when Qat a library. The trouble makers are not there to use the library, but there to use the place for a place to play. It wasn't built for that with yours and my tax dollars. What the kids that are causing trouble need, is a good stick at the library and again when they get home. Needless to say. this can't happen in our "rights" country today. 1 would propose that the county Q commissioners pass an ordinance giving the librarian the authority to put anyone out that is causing trouble. If they don't leave, let her call the law and take their parents to court. Just remember, discipline starts at home. ? Maurice Fleishman, who was mentioned in this column last week called me last Friday. He said that he was sorry to hear about the death of Willie Hodgin. Maurice said that Willie came to town one day and pitched for Fayetteville and that he was the catcher. He also stated that he had caught Alfred Cole at one time in his life. It was good to hear from Maurice and glad that he reads The 9 News-Journal and this column. Maybe most of you haven't been thinking about it but the Democra tic Convention will be on the tube next week. I only hope that the Cablevision will stay on so that people will have something else to look at if they kdon't like the convention. From the phone calls during the last convention when the cable stations were out, it seemed most folks wanted a change. So if lightning strikes again, please call City Hall and not this councilman. You know that it's almost time for school to start again. If this heat wave doesn't break before then, it "will be hard to teach anyone in a hot classroom. of the county Agricultural Exten sion Service, reported Tuesday. He said damage was done in the Ashley Heights and Ashmont sec tions to the crops of James Nixon, Alvin Robertson and J.W. King, and between Wayside and Rockfish to the crops of Tommy McCall, the Gillis farms, Wayne Monroe, Buddy Newton, and the Lindsay farms. Young said the damage amounted to 10 to 90 percent of the crops. Nixon reported 30 of his 37 acres of tobacco were damaged, six of them totally. The high winds that accom panied the storm knocked down trees and limbs throughout the area. MeCall's home was damaged when a large tree limb was knocked down on it by the wind. Recital Friday Joan Frazier will present her senior piano recital Friday at 8 p.m. in Raeford Presbyterian Church. The public is invited. Teachers (Continued from page 1) replace glass broken recently by people breaking in and by vandals. He said little damage is done at other schools. "If it continues," he said, "we'll have to discuss hiring a guard," and a Community Watch will be looked into. The Community Watch system, recommended by sheriff s departments throughout the state, has private citizens voluntarily reporting to a law enforcement agency the presence of people or vehicles in a neighbor hood in which the visitors appear to have no legitimate business. Autry, referring to other schools, said that West Hoke, for instance, doesn't have over S10 a year in damages. He indicated part of the diffi culty in preventing the damage is that many children attending South Hoke live outside the community. The school contains Grades Two through Four. The attendance policy accepted by the board says this. --"To receive credit, pupils shall attend at least 150 days each term," at least 25 days in each six-weeks grading period, except when a medical doctor shows a pupil mentally or physically unable to attend. - Failure to attend 150 or more days will result in an automatic failing grade in all subjects. Ele mentary students (kindergarten through Grade Six) will receive a grade of "G" if they attend less than 25 days of school in a six-weeks grading period. Secon dary students (grades Seven through 12) will receive a grade of 65 for a six-weeks grading period if they attend less than 25 days in the period . -The principal of each school shall formulate necessary proce dures. --Appeals to the superintendent, then the school board, are permiss able. -Each school is to develop a program to encourage attendance.
