^AZ. VAGED BIBLE ?? This leather-bound Bible, printed more than 100 years ago, is one of the several old books Bob McDowell retrieved from a dumpster near Scurlock School after discovering them accidentally. The pen gives an idea of the size of the book. It turns out, though, that they were thrown out by mistake, and Buddy Blue, the owner, was arranging this week to get them back. Blue acted after reading The News-Journal's September 1 7 report of the recovery of the books. | Staff photo. ) In District Court ? Hoke Agricultural Extension News by Willie Feathervtone, Jr. County Extension Chairman Plans have been made for an exciting Open House at North Carolina State University on Sat urday. September 26. The Open House period will be from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The University provides a day annually for high school students, transfer students, parents, school counse lors. teachers and administrators to visit and observe the many op portunities available at NCSU. Some of the highlights are: ??The traditional booths and exhibits will be in Reynolds Coliseum. ? The program is decentralized in the departments across the schools. ? Refreshments will be provided in various locations on campus. --Football tickets for the N.C. State vs. Maryland game in the evening will be available at a reduced price. Through the cooperation of manv local people under the leader ship of A I Potts, about 50 Hoke High School students will partici pate in Open House on Saturday. Potts is president of the local NCSU Alumni Association. ? * ? Two Nickels for Know-How Nickels for Know-How is a program by which farm people and all users of feed and fertilizer contribute to agricultural research and education in North Carolina. Everv six years North Carolinians vote on whether to continue the program or not. If passed this year, all users of feed and fertilizer will be assessed two nickels per ton of feed and fertilizer they buy. These funds are collected by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture. The Board of Directors of the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation determines how this money is spent. Each county in North Carolina has a director on this board. In Hoke County the director is Earl Hendrix. who was appointed upon recommendations from the dean of the School of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NCSU. I believe the "Nickels" program should be continued for these primary reasons: --Nickels money has helped im prove both the quality and the quantity of the School of Agricul ture. extension, research and teaching programs. It has strengthened the state's economy which has certainly benefited our farmers and every coagumer. -Nickels funas W^nnitiate pro grams that would not get started without this source of money. -This self ? help effort improves the image of rural people. It shows that they are willing to work and sacrifice for the years ahead. The referendum will be held November 24. A "yes" vote means you want the researchers at N.C. State to continue to seize every opportunity to solve new problems in agriculture as soon as they arise. SOCIAL ITtMS - - Dial 875-21 21 Johnson & Johnson COTTON BALLS 65's Why Pay $1.27?
